Method of making alkylene glycols

Claim Score by NHIP

Read claim 1, the broadest

Abstract

Methods and systems for preparing alkylene glycols are described herein. The methods and systems incorporate the novel use of a high shear device to promote dispersion and solubility of alkylene oxides with water. The high shear device may allow for lower reaction temperatures and pressures and may also reduce reaction time.

A method of hydrating an alkylene oxide comprising:a) forming a dispersion of an alkylene oxide gas and a water stream in a high shear device under high shear conditions, wherein said dispersion comprises gas bubbles having a mean diameter of less than about 1 micron;and b) introducing said dispersion into a fixed-bed reactor to hydrate the alkylene oxide gas and form an alkylene glycol, wherein said fixed-bed reactor comprises a hydration catalyst.

A method of hydrating an alkylene oxide comprising:a) forming a dispersion of an alkylene oxide gas and a water stream in a high shear device comprising a generator under high shear conditions, wherein said dispersion comprises gas bubbles having a mean diameter of less than about 1 micron;and b) introducing said dispersion into a vessel;and c) introducing a catalyst slurry comprising a hydration catalyst into said vessel and allowing hydration of the alkylene oxide gas to take place and to produce an alkylene glycol.
