Improvements in Adjustable Brackets, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in adjustable brackets for book and other io shelves, and has for its object the free vertical adjustment of a bracket or brackets carrying ^a shelf or the like to any desired height and there firmly locking it against a load or pressure by a simple mechanical movement.

In order that my invention may be clearly understood, I have appended the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which—

Figure 1 is an elevation of a bracket in a locked position with a dotted outline show20 ing the position of unlocking for adjustment.

Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof; and Fig. 3 is a view of the bracket-arm attached to one half of the sleeve, and Fig. 4 shows the other half of said sleeve. Fig. 5 is a view of a portion 25 of the split tube carrying the brackets.

Similar letters of reference are used throughout the several views.

In carrying my invention into effect I employ a straight bracket arm or lever A, 30 pivoted at c, the shorter length or extension thereof, / being wedge-shaped, as shown. Two semicircular sleeves are employed, having wing-pieces or extensions a a', which are bored, slotted, or socketed at.δ to receive the 35 ends of the trunnion stud, rivet, or bolt c, which forms the pivot of the bracket A. A tubular post B, split at e, is attached to the wall, floor, ceiling, or to a frame and forms a vertical support for the bracket-arms A.

Within the bore are inserted the semicircular sleeves, as shown by Figs. 2, 3, and 4, the wing-pieces or extensions a a' passing through the slit e in the tube B and the bracket arm or lever A being held between them by the I 45 pivot c.

When the longer member of the bracket arm or lever A is raised upward, as shown by the dotted outline in Fig. 1, the sleeves are loose and free to slide vertically in the bore of the tubular standard B. When the arm or 50 lever A is depressed, the wedge-shaped end d is forced between the aforesaid sleeves, opening them so as to fit the bore of B so tightly as to lock the bracket most effectually in position against an impressed load or strain. A 55 ledge/is bent up or formed upon A at right angles to its face, so as to abut upon the lower edge of wing-piece or extension a to maintain A at a perfect right angle relatively to B when locked. 60 . I may without departing from the essential features of my invention use a bolt, stud, or set-screw as a fulcrum at c and may dispense with the slot b on A, employing in lieu thereof a plain hole, and as my inven- 65 tion is also applicable to shop-fittings and other like purposes I may modify the shape and arrangement of the bracket-arm A to suit various conditions of adaptation.
