FASTENING FOR BRACELETS.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN;

Be it known that I, George H. Soule, of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fastening for Bracelets; and do hereby declare that the following is a full,.clear, and exact description thereof,-reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

The nature of my invention consists in so forming the fastening-device as to allow of the chain of the bracelet being.permanently fastened, therein, at or near one of its ends, while the other end of said chain is left free to slide in said fastener, and to be secured therein at any desired point of the chain, so that the bracelet can be thus made to suit in size any wrist.

. In order to enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use my invention, I will describe it as follows, viz

I make the clasp or fastener, A, fig.l, of a shape and size to correspond with the chain, B,'to which it is to be attached. In one end of the clasp, as seen at a, fig. 2, I fasten permanently the chain. The other end is made so as to allow the chain to slide freely therein.

In order to fasten the chain B in the, clasp or' fastener .A, at any desired point of said chain, I attach to the end of the claspyby means of a hinge, as seen ate, a lever, D, which is shown open.in fig. 1, and closed in fig. 2. The lever is provided, at its.opposite end from the hinge, with a spring-catch, as seen at/Z, fig. 1, which, when the clasp is being closed, is forced down through a mortise, b, m the clasp, at e, fig. l, and,, when it is forced home therein, the upper end f passes the point g at the side of the mortise b, and springs out under the same and holds it there. There is a small projection on the front of the spring-catch, which extends above it, and therefore does not pass the point g when the clasp is being closed; and, when it is desired to open the clasp,. I press this piece,‘a, backward, and this carries with it the spring-catch d, and relieves it from the point g, and then the lever D is free to open. To the under side of D is attached a spring, o, which, when the lever D is pressed down on the clasp in closing, is carried down with it, and passes through the large mortise^, and presses upon the chain B, when.it is in its place in the clasp, and holds it as placed therein.

This clasp may be ornamented in any desired way, and made to suit any desired chain.
