. Be it known that I, Shearman Botteese, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in _ the District of Columbia, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Dress-Suit-Case Covers, of which the follow-. ' i ng is a specification.

This invention is an improvement in covers for satchels of the kind commonly known as ‘‘dress-suitcases; ” and the invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 is a top plan view, of a dress-suit case provided with my improvements, parts of the cover being broken away in both figures to show the clasps for securing' one edge of the cover to the case. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of a somewhat different form of case from that shown in Fig. 1 provided with my improvements, parts being broken away. Fig. 4 is a detail section on about line 4 4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detail top plan view showing the cut-out portion of the cover to fit around the handle of the suit-case, and Fig. 6 is a detail vertical section of the cover on about line 6 6 of Fig. 2.

By my invention I seek to provide a protecting-cover for dress-suit cases which can be secured snugly upon the case, does not interfere with the opening or closing of the case, and will afford means for carrying magazines, newspapers, or the like on one side, and a pair of rubbers or the like on the other side, as will more fully appear hereinafter.

The cover may be made of canvas or other cotton stuff or material and will preferably be made of khaki color and may preferably be provided with corner-pieces a, of brass or other suitable protecting material.

In Figs. 1 and 2 the suit-case is shown as having one side B larger than the other side C, so that the joint D between the two sides of the case comes nearer to one edge of the case than the other, and the cover E is formed with the opposite pocket-sections F and G, which are united at the lower edge at H, and these pocket-sections F and G conform to the casesections B and C of the suit-case. The pocketsection F is of such size that it ordinarily will be kept in place on the section B of the case when fitted thereon and held to the handle portions, as presently described; but the section G is smaller than the pocket-section F, and in order to secure the ends of the said pocket-section at the upper edge of the suitcase I pro vide hook-like clips I on the pocketsection G at the upper edge of the mouth thereof arranged and adapted to hook over, as best shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 4, and which operate to securely hold the pocket-section G to the section of the suit-case which it covers at the upper corners of the latter. In some instances, especially when the side sections of the suit-case are of the same size, as shown, for instance, in Fig. 3 of the drawings, it may be desirable to provide hook-like clasps i on both pocket-sections of the cover to engage over the respective sections of the suit-case.

As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, I provide the top portion of the cover-pocket which overlies the lock J with an opening K, through which the lock is exposed, the side strap K' of said opening K being arranged to be crossed by the bolt-carrier J' of the lock in order to secure the central portion of the cover snugly in place without interfering in any way with ready access to the lock. Openings L are arranged to fit around the handles M at the connection of the latter with the suit-case, such openings being provided at one side with the closing-straps L, arranged for detachable connection at L² with the cover-section, so the cover may be neatly and securely applied around the handle. These openings L may be angular, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 5, or they may curve, as illustrated at L⁴ in Fig. 3, and where handles M' are provided on both sections of the suit-case both sections or pockets of the cover may be provided with the openings for the handles, as shown in Fig. 3. One section of the cover is provided at N with an opening for the strap carrying the buckle Ν', while the other section or pocket of the cover is provided at O with an opening for the passage of the strap O' to engage with the said.buckle Ν', as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. This permits the passage of the strap ordinarily employed for securingthe suit-case and the arrangement of said straps outside of the pocket-sections of the cover so they can be manipulated whenever desired without displacing the cover.

On one side of the cover I provide a large pocket P, having a flap P' and adapted to receive newspapers, magazines, or other articles which the traveler may desire to carry in convenient reach, while on the other side of the cover I provide the vertically-elongated pockets Q, arranged near the ends of the cover, so they will not interfere in carrying the case
