Beitknowntliatl, Solomon Hainsfurther, a citizen of tlie United States, residing at Winchester in the county of Scott and State of 5 Illinois, have invented a new and useful Separable Fastener, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to separable fasteners.

The objects of tlie invention are to improve, io strengthen, and simplify the construction of such devices and to increase their efficiency in use.

With these objects in view the invention resides in the particular combination and ar15 rangement of parts and in the precise details of construction hereinafter described, with reference to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, wherein—

The improved, fastening device comprises two cooperating members 1 and 2. The member 1 is formed with two parallel side flanges 3 and 4, each of which is provided with an 3° internal guide-groove, as shown at 5 and 6.

Tlie member 2 is formed with side ribs or guides 7 and 8, which fit into the guide-grooves 5 and 6, thus adapting tlie member 2 to be slid longitudinally upon the member 1 be35 tween tlie side flanges 3 and 4 thereof. Between the side flanges 3 and 4 the member 1 is formed with a plurality of notches or ratchet-teeth 9. Upon the lower surface of the member 2 is pivoted a spring-catch 10, 4° having a hooked portion or catch 11 to engage the ratchet-teeth 9 of the member 1. Connected with the spring-catch 10 is a tugger 12, which projects upward, through a slot 13 in the member 2 and is bent at its upper 45 end, as shown at 14, to provide means for engaging said tugger with the finger-nail of the index-finger to draw the spring-catch 10 away from the ratchet-teeth. 9 and permit the mem ber 2 to be withdrawn from the member 1 in unfastening the buckle. The bent end of tlie 5° tugger 12 is adapted to be engaged by a pivotlatch 16 on the upper surface of the member 2 to hold the spring 10 away from the ratchetteeth 9 in unfastening the buckle. As soon as the latch 16 is disengaged from tlie tugger 55 12 the spring-catch 1.0 will engage the ratchetteeth 9.

Formed on one end of the member 1 is an ear or lug 17, having therein a perforation 18 and a slot 19. A similar lug 20, having there- 60 in a perforation 21 and a slot 22, is formed on the opposite end of tlie member 2. The lugs 17 and 20 provide means for attaching the two parts of the fastening device to tlie article upon which they are intended to be 65 used. In sewing the fastening device to a garment it may be found convenient to pass the threads through both the slot and the perforation, and in riveting the fastening device to a shoe, or the like it may be found desir- 7° able merely to pass the rivet through tlie perforation.

In tlie form of invention illustrated and described the member 1, with its side flanges, ratchet-teeth, and attaching ear or lug, may 75 be cast in one piece of any suitable metal. The member 2 likewise may be cast in a single piece, if desired.

The device of the invention is strong, durable, simple, ornamental, and inexpensive in So construction, as well as thoroughly practical and satisfactory in operation. In its particular combination and arrangement of parts and in the precise details of construction it presents an improvement over prior devices of 85 a similar character.
