Be it known that I, Edward Phillips, a citizen of the United States, residing at 719 North Seventh street, East St. Louis, St. Clair 5 county, State of Illinois, have invented certain new. and useful Improvements in ShoeFasteners, of which the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accomio panying drawings, forming a part hereof.

My invention relates to shoe-fasteners; and it consists of the features‘ herein shown, described, and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side eleva15 tion of a shoe embodying the principles of my invention. ‘ Fig. 2 is a plan Showing how the fastening-straps interlace and showing the fasteners.

Referring to the dra wings in detail, the flaps 20 3 and 4 have interlacing tongues 5 and 6, there being spaces 7 between the tongues 5 to receive the tongpes 6 and there being spaces 8 between the tongues 6 to receive the tongues 5, so that when the shoe is put on and the 25 flaps 3 and 4 brought together the tongues 5 and 6 interlace oyer the instep. The fastener members 9 upon the outer ends of the tongues 6 engage the fastener members 10, fastened to the flaps 3 in line with the spaces 7, and similar fastener members 11 upon the inner 30 ends of the tongues 5 engage the fastener members 12 in line with the spaces 8.

By the application of my invention to a shoe the flaps 3 and 4 may be drawn as closely together as desired by moving tide fastener mem- 35 bers 10 arid 12, and when the flaps have been fastened the tongues 5 and 6 completely cover the instep, thus keeping out cold and d irt, and at the same time the instep is flexible and will not injure the foot of the wearer. 4°
