Corner-protector.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Theodore Scherf, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Elizabeth, county of Union, State 5 of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corner₇Protectors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.

io My invention relates to corner-protectors such as are commonly employed for protecting corners of booksand similar objects; and it consists in the combination, with a metallic shield or shield composed of a hard and sub15 stantially non-porous material, of a piece of porous material secured thereto and provided with an adhesive substance capable of being dissolved in water.

The object of my invention is to provide a so corner-protector with means whereby it may be readily attached to the object which it is intended to protect.

I will now proceed to describe a protector embodying my invention and will then point 25 out the novel features in claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 shows a portion of a book-cover having a protector embodying my invention applied to the corner thereof. Fig. 2 is a detail face view of the pro30 tector removed. Fig. 3 is a view in transverse section of the book-cover and protector secured thereto, the plane of section being taken substantially upon the line 3 3 of Fig.· 1. Fig. 4 is a face view of a protector of 35 slightly-modified form. Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view of the same, the plane of section being taken substantially upon the line 5 5 of Fig. 4.

In the embodiment of my invention herein 40 illustrated the protector comprises a shield formed of a plate 6, two flanges 7 7, and portions 8, connecting the flanges 7 7 with the plate 6. This shield is usually and preferably made of metal or may be made of any 45 suitable hard and non - yielding material. Suitable material for this purpose is invariably substantially nomporous. For the latter reason it is almost impossible to successfully employ an adhesive material therewith, 5° because of the difficulty of making same stick to the shield. I therefore supply a piece of porous material 9—such as bristol-board, fabric, or the like—which I secure to the plate 6 of the shield in such a manner as to leave one side thereof exposed. To this side I ap- 5 5 ply an adhesive material which I allow to dry. The article is then ready for use at any time by merely moistening the adhesive material and applying it in the ordinary manner.

In the embodiment of my invention shown 60 in. Figs. 1, 2, and 3 I secure the piece of porous material to the plate 6 of the shield by recessing or offsetting a portion of the plate 6, as at 10, and fitting the porous material thereto. 65

I may, if desired, punch up a small tongue in the offset or recessed portion 10, as at 11, to assist in securing the piece of material in place. In Figs. 4 and 5 I have shown a modified form of my device in which several such 7° tongues 11 are shown as punched out of the plate 6, but in which there is no recessed portion. In this form the porous material, which may conveniently be a piece of. fabric, will be secured to the plate 6 by medium of 75 the tongues alone.

A protector so formed is an article of manufacture complete in itself, which may be sold ready for use. When used, it will only .be necessary to wet the adhesive material and 80 apply the article in place. The fabric or other porous material will stick to the bookcover or similar object and, being secured against movement upon the shield, will securely hold the protector in place against ac- 85 cidental removal.

It will be seen that by my invention I provide a cheap and efficient protector which may be readily secured in place without the usual attaching devices and without damag- 90 ing the object to which it is secured. It will also be understood that while I have shown and described my device as applied to the corner of a book it may equally be employed for the side edges, if desired, or may consti- 95 tute a binding all around the edge of the book-cover. It may also be employed for protecting the edges or corners of other articles besides books, as desired.
