CONSTRUCTION OF METALLIC BEDSTEADS.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Benjamin Charles Barton, a subject of His Majesty the King of Great Britain, of Granville Iron Works, Gran5 ville street, in the city of Birmingham, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Construction of Metallic Bedsteads, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable io those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates chiefly to improvements in the method of construction of me¹tallic bedsteads, by means of which I make a 15 portable and collapsible bedstead self-contained within the thickness of the angular or other sectioned frame and of wrought material thoughout, which bedstead is very rigid and durable when in use and very compact 20 when collapsed and out of use and convenient for transit.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the portable and collapsible bedstead constructed according to 25 this invention. Fig. 2 shows the same when partly collapsed. Fig. 3 shows the bedstead collapsed with the frame partly broken away. Fig. 4 is a section on line x x of Fig. 1, showing one way of locking the parts together. 30. Fig. 5 is a section on. line Y Y of Fig. 1, and Fig. 6 shows a modification of this invention.

In describing this invention, I form the angular or other sectioned frame 1 of the bedstead preferably in one piece, with ends 2 3 35 and sides 4 5, which may be strengthened, if desired. The legs 6 7 8 9 pass through holes or cut-away parts 10 11 12 13 at or near the corners of the frame 1, the legs 6 7 being in one piece with the head-rail 14 and the legs 40 8 9 in one piece with the foot-rail 15, while the bars 16 17 of the head and foot rails 1415 pass through holes 18 19 in the ends 2 3, the ends of the bars 1617 being fixed to strips 20 21.

Diagonal or other suitable braces 22 23 24 25 are pivoted or jointed at 26 27 28 29, the other ends being pivoted or jointed at 30 31 32 33 to the legs 6 7 8 9', the weight being distributed over eight points instead of the 50 whole frame being carried by the legs, the braces also preventing the frame from sagging, thereby-giving greater rigidity to the bedstead. Locking-levers 34 35 are provided to engage with the. strips 20 21 to hold the legs and parts together in position, as shown by 55 Figs. 1 and 4, or other means may be employed for this purpose.

Instead of the legs passing through holes in the frame they may pass through brackets fixed at each corner, as shown by Fig. 6, the 60 bracket 39 being cut away at 40 to allow the rail to be therein when the bedstead is collapsed, as shown by dotted lines.

The frame may be jointed in the center, and the legs 6 7 and legs 8 9 may be connected by 65 cross-stays, if desired.

When the bedstead is not required for use, the same can readily be collapsed by drawing the levers 34 35 free of the strips 20 21, when the legs, braces, and parts can be moved into 70 the position shown by Fig. 2, the braces being such a length and pivoted in such a manner that when the bedstead is totally collapsed the braces draw the head and foot rails 14 15 against the ends 2 3, while the leg, braces, 75 and other parts are within the depth of the frame, as shown by Fig. 3 of the drawings.

I do not limit myself to the exact details shown, as the same can be modified without departing from the nature of my invention. 80

It will therefore be seen that my invention comprises a bedstead composed of a main frame and end members, the end members comprising legs and cross . top frames composed of cross-bars and rods parallel with the 85 legs which form a part thereof, the said legs and that portion of the legs which form a part of the cross top frames of the end members being passed through holes at the ends of the frame, said holes being so formed' as to per- 90 mit the end members of the bedstead to be folded adjacent to the frame, and means for holding the end members of the bedstead to the frame and in an upright position.
