CISTERN-TOP.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 754,801, dated March 15, 1904.

To all whom it may concern:

Beitknown that!, Sanford Pomroy, a citizen of the United States, resid ing at Byron, in the county of Olmsted and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cistern-Tops, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in cisterns, more especially to “tops” therefor.

io It has for its object to afford an effective means of protection or guard to the entrance of a cistern receiving water via the housepipe or spouting and to provide for the exclusion of extraneous or foreign substance 15 from the cistern.

Said invention consists of the detailed construction and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter more fully disclosed, and specifically pointed out by the claims con20 eluding the following specification.

In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a vertical section. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2, Fig. 1.

In the carrying out of my invention I employ a receptacle 1, which may be a tile or cylinder of earthenware or terra-cotta, with its lower or bottom end especially formed with a lateral enlargement or flange l^a, the purpose of which will presently appear. Said cylinder or receptacle has near its upper end a lateral pipe-inlet 2 for connection with the house pipe or spout to deliver the water thereinto, it thence passing from the latter into the cistern. Also opening laterally through said cylinder, near its bottom or lower end, is an overflow-pipe 3. The upper end of the cylinder or receptacle 1 is stepped, providing it at that point with an inner shoulder or 40 ledge 4 to permit of the application thereto of an inner or supplemental cover 5, if it is desired to use such, in addition to the main or outer cover 6 to more eflectually guard against the entrance to said cylinder or re45 ceptacle, consequently to the cistern, of any foreign or unsanitary matter.

In arranging or placing the part or top 1 in position its bottom or flanged end l^ais caused to rest upon the upper end of the cis50 tern 7, having a lateral flange 7^a thereon par ticularly for that purpose, the flange 7“, however, extending -.ome distance beyond the plane of the flf ge l^a of parti. Upon the projecting part νί the flange 7“is laid a course or layer of bricks 8, abutting the flange l^a, 55 and upon the flange 1“ is laid a like course or? layer of bricks 9, abutting the part 1 and overlying or breaking joints with the flange l^aand the layer or course of bricks 8, as shown. Thus it will be noted that the part or top 60 1 is secured or “keyed” in position upon the cistern with an effective joint-closure, the purpose of which is apparent.
