- 1I claim as my invention— 1. The combination of the base-plate, the striking-plate adjustable thereon and having a strike, means of securing said plates to a jamb or door-casing, and an auxiliary base- 100 £2 749,818 plate adapted to be attached to said jamb or casing and to be retained thereon by said strike.
- 2The base-plate having a rim, said base5 plate being adapted to be let into a jamb or door-casing flush with the top of said rim, and a striking-plate adjustable on said base-plate within said rim and having a strike, said rim being discontinued for a distance to permit the adjustment of said strike. In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses. CHARLES HAMEL. Witnesses:Albert M. Moore, Frank C. Wasley.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Charles Hamel, a citizen of the United States, residing in Lowell, in the county of Middlesex and Commonwealth 5 of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Striking-Plates for Locks and Latches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to adjustable strikio ing-plates for locks and latches.
The principal object of this invention is to cover the wood of the jamb above and below the movable parts of the device within the depression or shallow mortise which commonly 15 receives the striking-plate.
Other objects of this invention are simplicity of construction and convenience of use.
The parts of the striking-plate herein described may be formed out of sheet metal by so dies at slight expense, and said plate may be secured to the jamb by two wood-screws, such as are commonly employed to hold a non-adjustable striking-plate in place.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 25 to 4 are oblique‘views, Fig. 1 representing a striking-plate proper; Fig. 2, the complete device attached to a jamb or door-casing; Fig. 3, the main base-plate, and Fig. 4 the auxiliary base-plate. Fig. 5 is a vertical longitu30 dinal central section of an end. portion of the device and of the jamb or door-frame to which it is attached.
A is the jamb or door casing.
B is the striking-plate proper, provided with 35 the usual strike δ, which projects beyond the jamb to receive the blow of the bolt of a knoblatch. The plate B in form is substantially like the ordinary non - adjustable striking-, plate, except that instead of the usual round 4° screw-receiving holes I use longitudinal slots δ' δ2 to allow the striking-plate to be moved in the direction of its length without moving its attaching-screws. Said plate B is provided with openings δ3 δ4 to receive the bolts of a 45 knob latch and lock in the usual manner.
The base-plate C is a shallow box, preferably of sheet metal, of inside width to receive the plate B and allow the latter to slide therein and of an inside length sufficient to allow the 5° full longitudinal movement therein of the plate B, the movement of course being limited by the length of the slot V V. The base-plate C is provided with a bolt-receiving opening c of a width as great as either of the openings δ3 δ4 and of sufficient length to allow the 55 bolts to passthrough said base-plate after having passed through the striking-plate whatever be the position of the. latter. The baseplate is provided with round holes dd, through which screws may be driven into the wood of 60 the jamb or door-casing after passing through the. slots δ' δ2 of the striking-plate. The holes d d are placed at the middle of the slots δ' δ2 when the plate B is midway between its extreme positions on the base-plate. The side 65 or rim d of the base-plate reaches to the outer face of the striking-plate and is intended to be flush with the surface of the jamb or doorcasing when in position; but a part of this rim c3 is cut away at c4 for a distance sufficient to 70 allow the strike δ to have its extreme adjustment in either direction, and in Figs. 2 and 3 said rim is shown as cut away at both sides of the base-plate to allow the striking-plate to be reversed. 75
Of course when the base-plate is applied to the jamb or casing the wood on the side of the striking-plate is cut away at a to permit the adjustment of the striking-plate and its strike. To cover the wood above and below the strike 80 δ, I use the auxiliary base-plate C', (shown in Fig. 4,) which is made of sheet metal preferably and is provided with upturned ends d, which serve as a continuation of the rim of the plate C, said plate C' having prongs d\ 85 adapted to enter the wood of the jamb or casing, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2, and retained in the wood by the overlying strike δ. Obviously the auxiliary plate O' may be placed on either side of the plate C. 90
The above-described construction enables the entire device to be secured in place and the striking-plate to be held in its place by a single pair of screws—that is, the securing means are common to the striking and the base plate. 95
