To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, John P. Gordon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and‘State of 5 Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in a Combined Storm Apron and Hood, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to the improvement of io vehicle storm aprons and hoods; and the objects of my invention are to provide a combined storm apron and hood of improved construction which will close’ the forward portion of a vehicle and completely protect the 15 occupants against the entrance of rain or snow, to so construct my improved apron and hood as to .adapt it to fit on buggy tops and dashes of different sizes, and to produce other improvements the details of which will be 2o more fully pointed out hereinafter. · These objects I accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which—

In producing my improved apron and hood I form the body thereof of a.single piece of 4° waterproof material, and for the sake of con. venience in description I will refer to the same as consisting of central and side portions 1 and 2, the central portion 1 being designed, as indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, 45 to cover the front of the vehicle, the upper or top edge portion thereof being adapted to be held in the manner hereinafter described in connection with the forward transverse top bow of the buggy-top, and the lower part 50 of said central portion being engaged with the dash of the vehicle. From this central portion 1 depend the side portions 2, the rear edges of the latter being adapted to extend within or be overlapped by the side curtains 3 of the buggy-top. As indicated in Fig. 1 55 of the drawings, the side portions 2 are formed with extensions 2^a, which depend below the central or front portion!. The upper edge of the front 1 is formed with a transverse casing, such as is indicated more clearly at 4 in 60 Fig. 5, and through this casing passes a strap 6, which comprises a central rubber or elastic section 7, with which are united leather end sections 8, each of said end sections having extending therefrom a metal hook 9. The 65 leather portions 8 of the strap 6 are sewed or otherwise united with the casing 4, while the central portion of the casing, which embraces the rubber section 7, is shirred, as indicated at 10. The end hooks 9 of the strap 6 are, as 70 indicated in Fig. 1, adapted to be movably engaged with the upper and forward top jointpins 11 of the buggy-top. The lower portion of the front is, as prescribed for the upper portion, provided with a casing, the greater 75 portion of which is shirred, as indicated at 12, and through this casing passes an elastic strap-section 13, the latter having comparatively short leather'terminations 14, with which are connected hooks 15, these hooks 80 beiug adapted to engage the ends of the dash 16 when the shirred portion 12 is drawn down partially over said dash. In order to connect the side portions 2 of. the curtain with the buggy-top, I secure to each of said side por- 85 tions on its inner side a strap 17, the outer end of which is adapted to be adjustably connected with a buckle 18, which is affixed to a yokelike-spring-clamp 19, this clamp adapted to be made to.engage one of the forward bow side 90 arms 20 in the manner indicated more clearly in Fig. 2. As indicated at 21, the front portion 1 of the curtain may be provided with suitable windows or outlook-openings and with a suitably-placed rein-outlet .having a 95 flap or cover 22.

From the construction shpwn and described it will be seen that both the front and sides of the forward opening or entrance to the vehicle are closed by my improved hood and cur- too tain, and that owing to the employment of the hook-carrying straps at the upper and lower edges of the front portion 1 and the construction of these straps with elastic center

726,906 sections my improved apron and hood may be employed on buggy tops and dashes of different widths, the elastic operating to take up any slack or fullness in the goods forming 5 the curtain. It will be understood that by Dulling outward on the strap 17 the lips of the spring-clamps 19 will open by engagement with the bow side bars 20, permitting said clamps being readily withdrawn from said io bars. As indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the side extensions 2^a are adapted to depend on the outer side of the vehicle-body, which is indicated at 25, thus insuring protection against the entrance of rain at the 15 sides of the vehicle-entrance.
