Be it known that I, Francis D. Cleveland, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Winchesterjin the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Boxes or Cartons,of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to an improved carton or paper box adapted to contain and to itself conform to the shape of a sardine-box, which is usually made of tin and has its four corners rounded or of quadrantal form; and the invention resides in a single blank peculiarly constructed with top, bottom, and side forming sections, a stay-section, flaps to constitute closures for the opposite ends of the box, slits formed within the area of the blank, suitable end portions thereof, and tongues for engagements through said slits; and the invention furthermore resides in a boxcomposed of a blank, such as hereinabove referred to, properly bent to bring the various sections and flaps into the proper relations with each other and having the staysection of the blank disposed f acewise against and secured to one of the side-forming sections,and allsubstantially as hereinafter fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings and specified in the claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the paper box or carton adapted to contain a sardine-box and to be conformable to the shape thereof, one end thereof being indicated as closed and in horizontal section, while the other end thereof is shown as having its endclosing portions as yet remaining open. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the carton shown in Fig. 1 as taken on the line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-sectional view as taken at one edge portion of the box on the line 3 3, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the carton as in the condition represented in Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the cardboard blank comprising one piece of the' material from which the carton is produced.

Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the views.

The carton and the blank from which the said carton is made comprise the top and bottom forming sections A and B, of equal size and general rectangular shape, they having, however, the four quadrantal corners a 55 a a a, the opposite side-forming sections C and D, the one C being between and joining the top and bottom forming sections, while the one D is edgewise beyond the longitudinal edge of the other one of said first-named 60 sections, and the said comparatively narrow side-forming sections C and D have the opposite endwise-extended flaps gg, which project considerably beyond the ends of the top and bottom forming sections. One of the 65 first-named sections, in the present instance the one A, has at its longitudinal edge the lengthwise-ranging stay-section E, and each of said top and bottom forming sections has at its one end a flap G and at its other end a 70 flap H, which, furthermore, has a somewhat shorter tongue/, and said flaps G and H are themselves shorter than the width of the top and bottom forming sections A and B, the ends of these flaps having their j unction with 75 the first-named main sections at or near the points where the quadrantal corners merge into straight lines of boundary for each end of the main section proper, and along the straight line of junction of each flap G with. 80 the top and bottom, constituting sections A and B, respectively, is a straight slit d for the engagement therethrough of the tongue /, endwise oppositely arranged.

The carton is folded on the longitudinal 90 creases or folding-lines and the stay-section E disposed facewise against and permanently stuck with glue or paste or otherwise secured to the section at the opposite edge of the carton, which makes one of its long sides. The end flaps II relatively opposite those G are likewise inturned and superimposed against said flaps 5 G, the tongues f being engaged through the slits d, which in the closed condition of the box have their locations at the junctions of the top and bottom and ends.

The flaps g g, bent around to conform to io the, rounded contour at the corners of the box, constitute the closing means at and for the corners.
