TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that I, Jonathan Carter, of the town of Winchendon, in the county of Worcester, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Machine and Apparatus for Painting, Graining Ornamenting, and Varnishing Pails, Tubs, Churns, and other wood articles of hollow ware ; and the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which— ⁶

Figure 1 represents the apparatus or machine for graining pails, &amp;c., in perspective.

Figure 2 shows a modification of the same, with a reservoir for the paint, varnish, or coloring and gramingmatter, and a roller to communicate with and supply the die or printing-roll. °

The object of my invention is to facilitate and economize the painting, graining, ornamenting, and varnishing of pails, tubs, churns, and other articles of hollow ware.

My invention consists in the combination of the die or printing-roll (or a flexible roller) with a corresponding elastic-surface roller, to distribute varnish, sizing, paint, or any coloring-matter for graining, gilding, or ornamenting pails, tubs, churns, &amp;c., with a reservoir and supply-roller to convey the color to the distributingroll or cylinder to be brought in contact with the die or printing-roll. .

Also in the construction and arrangement of gear-mechanism and head or chuck for holding the pail, and revolving it, in combination with the rock-shaft or other device to bring the die'or printing-roll alternately in contact with the distributing-roller and the revolving pail, or other article to be painted, ornamented or varnished. · '

To. enable others to make and use my invention, I will describe it more fully, referring to the drawings, and to the letters marked theredn.

A table or bench, A, of suitable height and dimensions, supports the distributing-roller B, it being hung on a crank-shaft, b, having its bearings in two upright posts, e e. The distributing-roller B may be made of any desired form to correspond with the surface of the die or printing-roll D, and of any suitable material for the purpose. The die or printing-rolls D may be cast on a cylindrical base of wood, d, so as to be in a whole, unbroken surface. It may be a plain, smobth, elastic surface, for the purpose of putting on a plain coat of sizing, paint, or varnish ; or it may be divided off into staves or sections έ e e, as seen in fig. 2, for the purpose of imitating staves of different kinds and color of wood; or it may be cast with a raised printing-surface for graining the staves fff in sections, as seen in fig. 1. It will readily be seen that they may be cast so as to imprint any ornamental design or configuration that fancy my dictate, and, by changing the die-roll D, any desired number of colors may be imprinted so as to harmonize with each other, and produce a high style of ornamenting in colors in the most rapid manner. To a standard, E, secured to the bench A, are the chuck and gear-mechanism on which to hold and revolve the pail F, tub, or other article for painting. This may he so arranged with gear-wheels that any desired motion may be given to the article to bo painted, and the crankhandle G to turn it with may be placed in the most convenient position for the operator. The painting, graining, or ornamenting die-roll D may be hung on journals.^ A in the Vertical frame Η H on a roek-shaft, I, to be operated by the lever J by the foot, a cord, y, and weight, It, or a spring to hold it in contact with the distributing-roller B, and can be alternately brought to bear upon the pail F, tub, or other article, by the action of the foot of the operator. The' coloring-matter or paint may be put on to the distributing-roller B with a brush by hand, and conveyed on tb the printing-roll D by turning the crank b, as shown in fig. 1. This process requires two persons to operate the machine rapidly.

Another mode of constructing the machine so that one person can operate it with great facility, is shown in fig. 2, which is provided with a reservoir, K, for the paint 01· varnish, in which a CQunter-roller, L,.dips in the substance, and is revolved by its contact with the distributing-roller B, supplying it with the paint to be taken by the printing-roll D, and deposited on tho article. In this arrangement the series of painting-rollers D’B L may all be connected by gcar-whecls.or a belt, so as to be operated by the crank G that turns the pail F. . The die or printing-rolls may be made in sections, put on to staves so that the position of the figures or designs can be changed, thus enabling a greater variety to be produced with a less number of printing-rolls. The staves may be secured to the base or heads to join the cylinder by having the ends of the staves extend beyond the elastic printing-surface at both ends a sufficient distance to insert screws, or drive on a band

When thus constructed, they can be adjusted so as to be perfectly cylindrical by inserting wedges between the ends of the staves and the cylinder-head. .
