ADJUSTABLE HASP.

To all -whom it .may concern:

Be itknown that I* William E. Craven, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wilmington, in the county of Newcastle and State 5 of Delaware, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Hasps, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to adjustable hasps and hooks, and has for its object to provide io an improved device of the class described which will possess points of advantage in convenience, simplicity, inexpensiveness, effectiveness, and general efficiency.

Another object of the invention is to pro15 vide an improved device of the class described which is particularly applicable to stable, barn, and outhouse doors and gates and in other places exposed to the changes of temperature and the weather, whereby the ma2o terial of which they are composed is likely to be affected and the relative position of the parts changed.

In the^-drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a barn-door and adjoin25 ing parts, showing my improved hasp in operative position. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal horizontal sectional view of my improved hasp, partly broken away. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing a hook instead of a 30 hasp. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a modified form of the invention.

Corresponding parts in all the figures are denoted by the same reference characters.

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the 35 body or central portion of my improved hasp or hook. The body or central portion 1 may be of any desired shape, though preferably it will have a flat surface on at least two of its sides for a purpose hereinafterexplained. In 40 the form shown the body or central portion 1 is rectangular in cross-section.

Extending longitudinally through the center, substantially, of the body or central portion 1 is a bore 2, consisting of two portions 45 of different diameters, both of which are interiorly screw-threaded. Ahead 3 is adapted to fit adjustably 111 the portion of the bore 2 having the smaller diameter and is provided with means of securing it to an object, here 50 shown as a barn-door frame 4. In the form shown the head 3 has one end reduced and screw-threaded complementary to the por tion of the bore 2 having the smaller diameter and an eye 5, formed at the other end, by means of which the hasp or hook may be se- 55 cured to the door-frame 4 by a staple 6. The shank 7 of the hasp or hook portion proper has the end opposite the hasp or hook 8 screwthreaded complementary to the portion of the bore 2 having the larger diameter and is pref- 60 erably provided near said screw - threaded portion with a flat surface on at least two sides for the same purpose as the flat surface on the sides of the body or central portion 1.

It is evident that my improved hasp or hook 65 may be composed of any suitable material and made in many ways; but I prefer to form the same of metal and to cast the various parts in suitable molds.

The operation and advantages of my inven- 70 tion will be readily understood and appreciated. The head 3 is secured by means of the staple 6 to the door-frame 4. The body or central portion 1 is now secured on the reduced end of the head 3, which fits in the por- 75 tion of the bore 2 having the smaller diameter. The body or central portion 1 is not, however, screwed up against the shoulder formed on the head 3 by reducing the end portion to fit the bore 2., The shank 7 of the 80 hasp or hook 8 is now screwed into the portion of the-bore 2 having the larger diameter. The shank 7 is not, however, screwed up against the shoulder formed at the juncture of the two portions of the bore 2. A staple 9 85 is now fixed in the door 10 at a suitable distance to receive the hasp or hook 8. Now when it is desired to fasten the door 10 it is only necessarj⁷ to insert the hook 8 into the staple 9 or pass the hasp 8 over the staple 9 90 and insert a pin or a .lock in such staple 9. If for any reason the door 10 becomes warped or twisted or wrenched or the position relative to the door-frame 4 in any waj⁷ changed, so that the hasp or hook 8 no longer fits the 95 staple 9, it is only necessary to screw the head 3 or the shank 7, or both, into or out of the bodj⁷ or central portion 1 until the hasp or hook 8 does fit properly the staple 9. The flat surfaces provided upon the sides of the 100 body or central portion 1 and the shank 7 serve to furnish a good holding when the parts are being screwed into proper adjustment.

I do not desire to be understood as limiting myself to the details of construction and arrangement as herein described and illustrated, as it is manifest that variations and 5 modifications may be made in the features of construction and arrangement in the adaptation of the device to various conditions of use without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention and improvements. I la therefore reserve the right to all such variations and modifications as properly fall within the scope of my invention and the terms of the following claims.
