To all whom it may concern: ·
Be it known that I, Francis A. Peter, of Washington township, in the county of Lehigh and State of Pennsylvania, have in5 vented certain new and useful Improvements in Snow Guards or Fenders; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which io form part of this specification.
This invention is an improved snow guard or fender for use on roofs, its object being to provide a simple, strong, and near guard which can be readily applied to slate or shin15 gle roofs; and it consists in the novel construction of the guard hereinafter described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which—
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the com20 plete guard; Fig. 2, an enlarged longitudinal section therethrough, and Fig. 3 an enlarged front view of the guard-plate. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view of a slight modification of the guard.
The device comprises a guard-plate A and a fastening-bar B. The guard-plate stands transversely of and perpendicular to the bar and is preferably of ornamental, foliated design and provided with a notch a at bottom to fit over the bar B, and on its front side just above the notch is an abutment C, the lower end of which rests on top of the bar B and forms a brace for the plate. This abutment is. also shown as provided with a pintle 35 c on its lower end, which fits into a hole δ in the bar B and may be riveted thereto, thereby firmly uniting the plate and bar. Where the parts are to be riveted together, the guard-plate should be made of malleable or wrought metal. Above the upper end of abutment C the guard-plate A is provided with a projecting flange or shoulder D, under which (between it and the upper end of abutment C) the extremity of the upturned end
B' of bar B is fitted.
As shown, the fastening-bar B extends beyond the front of the guard-plate and is then bent baekwardly at an angle upon itself and toward the guard-plate, as at B', thus form50 ing a stiffening-brace for the guard-plate, which will relieve the pintle c and prevent the snow or ice breaking the guard from the bar. The portion of the bar projecting beyond the inner face of guard-plate is perforated,, as shown, for the passage of fastening 55 nails or screws, by which the guard may be attached in any desired position or place on a roof or wherever the guards are to be used.
The construction of the invention is perfectly obvious from the drawings and further 60 explanation is unnecessary; but I do not wish to confine myself to any particular size or dimension of parts, nor to any particular ornamental configuration of the guard-plate, nor to restrict the invention solely for use as a 65 snow-guard.
In Fig. 4 the brace B<sup>2</sup> is formed of a separate piece of metal riveted to the outer end of bar B instead of being formed, integral therewith. This obvious modification I con- 70 sider within the scope of my invention.
