To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Eli G. D. Wade, a citizen of the United States, residing at Malta, in the county of Morgan, State of Ohio, have 5 invented certain new and useful Improvements in Working Waistcoats, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to a workman’s or io mechanic’s waistcoat, and particularly to the form and disposition of the pockets and of the openings thereto.

The invention has for its object to provide such a garment with separated vertical oppoi5 sitely-located pocket-openings from which the pockets extend downwardly and laterally relatively in opposite directions, whereby said pockets are accessible only by one hand of the wearer and whereby articles are retained 2o securely within the pockets and the entrance of dirt, shavings, hay-seed, chaff, or other foreign matter is prevented.

A further object of the invention is to provide such waistcoat at its lower portion with 25 pockets at the sides adapted to directly receive the adjacent hand of the wearer, while at the upper breast portion there are provided pockets extending in opposite directions from the central opening and having the entrances 30 thereto in substantially vertical planes and at one side of each of the pockets, whereby opposite hands must be employed in getting access to a pocket and any article therein will be retained against loss should the wearer 35 of the garment stoop into such a position as would ordinarily cause articles contained in the usual form of pocket to fall therefrom.

A further object is to provide a band at the rear and having loops to receive tools or im40 plements, said band also serving to facilitate hand entrance in pockets adjacent thereto.

Other and further objects of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof particularly defined by the 45 appended claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective showing the garment; Fig. 2, a plan of the same in an extended position with parts broken away; Fig. 3, a detail elevation of 50 one side of the garment with the lining removed to show the position of the pockets, and Fig. 4 an elevation of a modified form having sleeves therein.

Like letters of reference refer to like parts throughout the several figures of the draw- 55 ings.

The letter A designates a workman’s or mechanic’s waistcoat which may be of any desired material or configuration and is provided at the opposite sides with armholes A' 60 and a central closure A² at the front adapted to be secured together by buttons A^s or other suitable fastening devices common in the art. At the opposite sides.of the garment, at the lower portion thereof and adjacent to the 65 seams joining said sides to the back, are handpockets B, having vertical openings B' at the rear edges thereof, said pockets extending from said openings toward the central closure A² of the garment. These pockets, may be 70 formed in any desired manner—that is, either separate from the garment or by stitching through two layers thereof, so as to leave the pocket between these layers. The pockets B may, if desired, be also provided with a small 75 change - pocket B² separate therefrom and within the main hand-pocket B. These pockets are adapted, respectively, to receive directly the right and left hands of the wearer for the purpose of protecting the same in cold 80 weather and may be used to receive any tool or article.

Above the pockets B and preferably at the front of the breast portion of the garment the pockets C are located and provided with ver- 85 tically-disposed openings C' at the front side thereof, said pockets each extending rearwardly from the closure A² at the front of the garment in an opposite direction to the pockets B, so that thepocket upon the left of the 90 garment may be entered by the right hand and that upon the right by the left hand, (or by the fingers of either hand, respectively,) as indicated by the arrows upon Fig. 1. It will be noticed that these pockets extend below 95 and entirely at one side of the opening O', so that any article placed therein cannot fall out when the user bends over or assumes any other ordinary position while at work.

In Fig. 4 a modified application of the in- 100 vention is shown which is the same as herein1 before described, except that the body por£ 703,684 tion D is provided with sleeves D' at opposite armholes A'. The hand-pockets E at the lower portion correspond to the pockets B in Fig. 1, and the breast-pockets F at the 5 upper portion are the same as the pockets C.

At the back of the garment a strap G is secured, which by being stitched at different points, as shown at G^f, presents a series of io loops G⁸, in which a workman may carry his tools—such, for instance, as a painter’s brush or a slater’s hammer. This strap Galso serves a useful function in connection with the pockets B, in that being stitched at the ends into 15 or adjacent to the side seams and adjacent to the lower ends of the openings B' of the side pockets B the said strap acts to keep the back of the garment and the inner ply of the pocket taut and smooth, thus facilitating the intro20 duction of a hand therein, reinforcing the jointure of the plies at the lower end of the opening, which is subject in use to heavy strain from the pressure and weight of the hands of the wearer, and helps to support 25 against sagging the weight of any articles in the pocket.

It will be noticed that by locating the pockets in the upper and lower portions of a side of the waistcoat and by disposing said 30 pockets in opposite directions none of the pockets overlap each other, all available space is utilized, and the pockets themselves constitute additional plies to the garment as a whole, thus contributing to strength and 35 warmth with a minimum of material. Furthermore,separating the upper breast-pockets and disposing the same in opposite directions necessitates the use of an opposite hand to gain access to either of said pockets, whereby 40 distortion of the openings thereof by habitual support of either hand therein is prevented and a safer closure against escape of articles is assured, notwithstanding long usage of the garment.

The uses of the garment will be clearly understood from the foregoing description, and it may be stated, in addition that the garment is so simple in construction that it may be very cheaply formed of material adapted to fully protect the workman against 50 cold and from the surroundings in which he is employed. When used in cold weather, the hands of the wearer may be readily protected in the pockets B, while pencils, rules, and other small articles will be safely held 55 within the breast-pockets C.

It will be obvious that changes may be made in the details of construction and configuration without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined by the appended 60 claims.
