IMPROVED FOLDING DESK.

To all Whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Theodore W. Kreitz, of Quincy, in the county of Adams, and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and improved Portable Folding Desk ; and I do hereby declare that the following i_{s a}full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference beip had to the accompanying drawings, of which— ‘°

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the desk elevated for use, and

-Figure 2 the same when closed or folded for transportation.

In the drawings, a; fig. 1, is a board, serving as a foundation, to which is jointed, at its front ed^e by linges, the frame b. To the back edge of this frame is hinged another frame, c, similar in all respects to the frame δ, and to its front edge is hinged in like manner the board or panel d, which serves as the platform or table surface of the desk, and is furnished with a raised strip at its front edge to prevent a book from slippinodown. To each of the frames b and c and the platform d, about the middle of their under sides, are hinged the frames or props e, the ends of which catch into the notches f cut respectively on the upper sides of ihoTrames δ and c and the panel a. Those props serve to sustain and adjust the several parts in a suitable position and elevation for the purposes required when in use, and when the instrument is folded together they lie flat in recesses prepared for them in the-several pieces to which they are attached.

The instrument as shown in the drawings is designed to sit on a table, box, barrel, or anythin handy w icii may serve to. support it within a certain range of elevation. But by increasing the dimensions or the number of frames similar to δ and c, the desk may be adapted to sit on the ground without other support. A . modification of it may also be applied to the arm of a chair to enable the sitter to read and write'with ease and comfort. Inkstands, pen-holders, or other conveniences for writing, may be attached in suitable positions to the platform d.
