BICYCLE-HANDLE-BAR GRIP.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Benjamin F. Wheeler, a citizen, of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the. county of Wayne, State of 5 Michigan, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Bicycle-Handle-Bar Grips; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in io the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. ~

This invention relates to hand-grips for bicycle handle-bars; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out particularly in the claims.

The object of the invention is to produce a hand-grip of the character described having an outer covering of leather and in which the arrangement is such as to obviate a protruding of the margin of the seam which unites 25 the halves of the leather cot or covering, to insure the perfect fitting of the leather covering to the core or shell, and to provide for thefastening of the ferrule at the end of the grip in a manner to securely retainit in place and 30 at the same time confine the end of the leather covering embraced by said ferrule and prevent the protrusion of the sharp edge of the ferrule.

Referring to the characters of reference, 1 designates a wooden shell of suitable shape and dimensions, which forms the core of the grip and is provided with a bore 2, adapted to receive the end of the handle - bar. (Not 60 shown.) Formed in the opposite sides of the core and extending longitudinally thereof and across the core’s closed end is a continuous medial channel 3. At or adjacent the inner open end of the core is an annular 65 shoulder which is crossed by the terminals of said channel, as shown at 5 in Fig. 5.,

The leather cot or covering of the grip is composed of two opposed blanks 6, which are shaped in suitable dies and whose meeting 70 margins 7 are sewed together with their outer faces in contact by a line of stitching'8, passing entirely through the blanks near their edges. (See Fig. 2.) The sides of the leather covering are sewed together with the flesh or 75 unfinished side of the leather outmost. In order to avoid the protruding of the margin of the seam 7 when the covering is placed upon the core,· said covering after being sewed is reversed or turned, so as to present 80 the finished side of the leather outermost and cause the margin of the seam 7 to extend inwardly. The covering is then placed upon the core.l so that the margin of the seam 7 will lie in the channel 3, as clearly shown in 85 Fig. 7, thereby ridding the exterior surface of the grip from the marginal projections of the seam caused by the united halves of the covering and rendering it smooth to the grasp of the hand. The leather covering is cut to 90 such size as to cause the inner end thereof, when the covering is placed upon the core, to extend over the shoulder 4 and lie upon the outer surface 9 of said shoulder, so as to be embraced by the ferrule 10 when placed 95 thereon. The width of the ferrule is such that the straight edge thereof when said ferrule is put in position extends over the shoulder 4 on the core, so that when the edge of said ferrule is turned inwardly, as shown ico

701,437 at 11 in Figs. 4 and 8, the leather covering is forced inward behind said shoulder to more securely retain the leather in place and at the same time lock the ferrule onto the core 5 to prevent its withdrawal by reason of the engagement of the inwardly-turned edge 11 behind the shoulder of the core, obviating the use of brads or other fastening means to retain the ferrule securely in position. As an io additional means for securing the covering upon the core, glue or other suitable adhesive may be employed, which is placed upon the core before the leather is forced into position thereon. By turning the edge of the 15 ferrule downward or inward, as described, to lock the ferrule in place the sharp edge of the ferrule is depressed, so that it will not scratch or cut the hand, as would result were the edge of the ferrule allowed to project 20 above the surface of the leather covering.
