Ambulatory medical apparatus and method using a robust communication protocol

Summary by NHIP

Robust Medical Telemetry Protocol

The system enables an ambulatory medical device and a communication device to exchange messages via a robust protocol ensuring message integrity. Messages utilize a multipart format containing a preamble, frame sync, telemetry ID, data, and validation code, where the validation code implicitly embeds the transmitting device's ID. Specific messages include op-codes, sequence numbers, and bolus numbers, while universal messages carry a universal identifier alongside device-specific identifiers.

Abstract

An implanted medical device (e.g. infusion pump) and external device communicate with one another via telemetry wherein messages are transmitted under a robust communication protocol. The communication protocol gives enhanced assurance concerning the integrity of messages that impact medical operations of the implantable device. Messages are transmitted using a multipart format that includes a preamble, a frame sync, a telemetry ID, data, and a validation code. The data portion of the message includes an op-code that dictates various other elements that form part of the message. The data portion may also include additional elements such as sequence numbers, bolus numbers, and duplicate data elements. A telemetry ID for the transmitting device may be implicitly embedded in the message as part of the validation code that is sent with the message and that must be pre-known by the receiver to confirm the integrity of the received message.

  1. 1
A medical system, comprising:a) an ambulatory medical device (MD) comprising MD electronic control circuitry that further comprises at least one MD telemetry system and at least one MD processor that controls, at least in part, operation of the MD telemetry system and operation of the medical device, wherein the medical device is configured to provide a treatment to a body of a patient or to monitor a selected state of the body;and b) a communication device (CD) comprising CD electronic control circuitry that further comprises at least one CD telemetry system and at least one CD processor that controls, at least in part, operation of the CD telemetry system and operation of the communication device, wherein the CD telemetry system sends messages to or receives messages from the MD telemetry system, wherein a portion of the messages sent between the communication device and the medical device are directed to specific medical device, or a specific communication device, by inclusion of an MD identifier that identifies the medical device or a CD identifier that identifies the communication device and wherein a further portion of the messages sent between the communication device and the medical device are universal messages, by inclusion of a universal identifier.
  2. 5
A medical system, comprising:a) an ambulatory medical device (MD) comprising MD electronic control circuitry that further comprises at least one MD telemetry system and at least one MD processor that controls, at least in part, operation of the MD telemetry system and operation of the medical device, wherein the medical device is configured to provide a treatment to a body of a patient or to monitor a selected state of the body;and b) a communication device (CD) comprising CD electronic control circuitry that further comprises at least one CD telemetry system and at least one CD processor that controls, at least in part, operation of the CD telemetry system and operation of the communication device, wherein the CD telemetry system sends messages to or receives messages from the MD telemetry system, wherein a portion of the messages sent between the communication device and the medical device are directed to specific medical device, or a specific communication device, by inclusion of an MD identifier that identifies the medical device or a CD identifier that identifies the communication device;and wherein a portion of the possible messages between the communication device and medical device are nonspecifically directed to the medical device or the communication device by inclusion of a universal identifier in a transmitted signal.
