DEVICE FOR DEADENING NOISE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 650,290, dated May 22,1900.

Be it known that I, Matthias J. Wirt, a citizen of the United States, residing at Scotland, in the county of Greene and State of In5 diana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Noise-t)eadeners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art ib to which it appertains to make and use the same.

In the manufacture and working of articles formed of sheet and plate metal, particularly when riveting plates forming parts of a 15 boiler, stack, or like article or when cutting the same by means of a cold-chisel or when pounding thereon for any purpose, the resultant noise is deafening and exceedingly objectionable to the workman and persons in the io immediate vicinity of the work, and in the case of the workman such noise results injuriously to the auricular nerves and adjacent parts.

The purpose of this invention is to provide 2$ a simple contrivance to be applied to and used in connection with the work to deaden the sound by checking the vibration incident to the blow delivered thereupon.

In its simplest construction the device con30 sists, essentially, of a base of a size and configuration according to the nature of the work in hand and a noise-deadening material applied to said base and adapted to be clamped against the work, so as to effect the desired 35 results.

In the specific formation of the appliance it is constructed when feasible in such a manner as to encircle the work, and the base may be of spring material, so as to automatically 40 grip the sides of the work and retain the noisedeadener in position without necessitating the employment of extraneous fastenings for this purpose.

For a full description of the invention and 45 the merits thereof aud also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and the drawings hereto attached.

While the essential and characteristic fea tures of the invention are necessarily susceptible of modification, still the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which—

In order to illustrate the application of the invention, the same is shown in connection with a piece of work 1, which maybeaboiler, 65 a stack, or like article composed of a series of-plates riveted together. For this class of work the contrivance is constructed so as to embrace the same, and appears in the form of a ring or band 2, preferably of spring metal 70 or other suitable material and having upon the side adapted to lie adjacent to the work noise-deadening material 3, which may be leather, rubber, or packing of any nature. The purpose of the material 3, which is fibrous, 75 is to absorb vibration, thereby preventing the accustomed ring incident to the delivery of a blow upon the boiler or other work when riveting, cutting with a cold-chisel, or pounding thereon. Grips 4 are located at the ter- 80 minals of the ring or band 2 for convenience in spreading the same when applying it to or removing it from the work.

The most general application of the invention is in connection with boilers, stacks, and 85 like articles. Hence the form illustrated has been selected,, so as to give an adequate idea of the purpose and intent of the invention. The shape of the device will be varied according to the particular nature of the work 90 in hand, so as to deaden the noise incident to delivering blows thereon.

Generally speaking, the appliance may be said to consist of a base provided upon the side intended to lie adjacent to the work with 95 a noise-deadening material, the latter being clamped between the work and the base by any means found most convenient for the purpose.
