LOCK-STRIKE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, James Speight Smith, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and Stateof Illinois, 5 have invented an Adjustable Striking-Plate for Door-Jambs, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved adjustable striking-plate for door locks and io jambs, and has for its object to provide a simple and convenient device of this kind that can be used either as a right or left plate.

Figure 1 is a elevation of a device embodying the improved features. Fig. 2 is a simi15 lar view with the adjustable plate removed.

Fig. 3 is an elevation of the removed adjustable plate; and Fig. 4 is a transverse section on line 4, Fig. 3, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow.

The device consists of the stationary strikeplate A and the adjustable plate or slide B, framed therein, the joining edges being smooth. The stationary plate A is provided in its respective ends with the screw-holes d 25 for the insertion of the usual screws in securing the same to the jamb or door-frame. This plate is provided longitudinally with a slotopening a', stopping short of the respective ends. The strike-plate is also provided with jo the cross-bars C C, having a boss or swell a³on the rear side thereof, Fig. 4, forming a seat for the companion adjusting-screws aP cP, which are inserted through the elongated apertures δ δ' in the ad justable plate and the holes d d' in the cross-bars C C'. In this form of construction the adjusting-screws aP cd do not enter the wood of the jamb, but end in the boss a³ and maybe termed a “righthand ” plate only.

When the device is to be reversible, so as to be used either as a right or left hand- plate, the cross-bars C C' are dispensed with, thus adapting the plate to be used on either side of the door, the adjusting-screws seating in 45 the wood of the jamb.

The stationary plate is per manently secured in place, the adjustable plate being framed therein and movable endwise, either up or down, in bringing the same into position to receive the latch and bolt of the door-lock. 5° The movable plate is locked in the position to which it is capable of being adjusted by meansbf the screws a⁸ a⁴. The stationary plate is provided with the usual projection g, which receives the impact of the latch. Theopenings 55 h and h' in the adjustable plate receive the latch and locking-bolt, respectively. This arrangement dispenses with the necessity of moving the strike-plate proper and leaving an unsightly cut-off recess either above or below 60 the same. The movable plate is easily and quickly adjusted as the varying conditions of the door-frame may require.

When made to be used as a right or left hand plate, either side may be faced outward, 65 in accordance with the position it is to occupy.
