LABEL-HOLDER.

Beit known that I, Lawrence K. Stevenson, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Unity, in the county of Williams and 5 State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Label-Holders; and I do hereby declare th’e following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to i o which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to an improvement in label-holders and is especially adapted for use by druggists. Its object is to provide a receptacle which can be readily opened and 15 closed at the top while attached to bottles, especially those of a round, oval, or curved form in cross-section, or other receptacles for the storage of articles Of commerce.

To these ends the invention consists in the 20 novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which—Figure 1 is a view of a portion of a bottle 25 having the device applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an inner side elevation of the device with cover raised. Fig. 3 is a top plan view with the cover down. Fig. .4 is a section on line 4 4, Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is a top plan view of 30 the holder with cover thrown back.

Referring to said figures by letters of reference, A is the body of the label-holder, having one surface conforming to the contour of the receptacle to which it is to be secured. 35 Hinged to said body A by means of a hinge a is a cover B, the inner surface of which likewise conforms for part of its length to the shape of the attached receptacle, a portion of it, as shown at &amp;, being cutoff or reduced for 40 the purpose hereinafter described.

Extending upward from body A at the side of the inner surface farthest from the hinge a is an extension C, which also conforms to the curvature of the receptacle and which is of 45 just sufficient size as to permit the cover B to pass back of it and fit snugly thereagainst. Other extensions D D, one each upon the inner and outer surfaces of the holder, are provided. Said extensions or guides are prefer50 ably composed of strips of metal soldered or otherwise secured to the inner surfaces of the body, although they may be formed by reduc ing the thickness of upward, continuations of the front and rear surfaces of the device.

Secured to the inner surface of the hinged 55 side of the body A is a Spring plate or rod E, which normally rests against the corresponding inner side of the cover and tends to force the same backward as soon as released from its closed position. A catch F is also pro- 60 vided at the opposite side for retaining the cover in closed position. This is preferably formed, as shown in' the drawings, to permit the ready release of the cover by the pressure of the finger against the lever portion of said 65 catch.

In use the concave surface of the labelholder is placed against the side of the bottle or other desired receptacle and attached thereto by means of cement or in any other 7c preferred manner. The device is then filled with labels having printed or otherwise expressed thereon the name or symbol of the material contained within the receptacle to which it is attached. The cover is then 75 pressed down, the cut-off portion &amp; permitting it to escape the side of the receptacle, and coming down behind extension C fits snugly thereagainst, forming a complete cover for the contents, while the holder fits closely to 80 the receptacle at all points on its inner surface. The extensions or guides D D serve the purpose of guiding the cover B to its correct position upon and to hold it securely on the ledges d, which are of sufficient width to 85 permit the sides of the cover to pass between the guide D and the receptacle. When it is desired to extract a label, the catch F, which engages the cover as soon as closed, is released, causing spring E to immediately force 90 cover B back and open, thereby exposing the. contents.

I preferably place the catch on the right side of the device, so that the receptacle can be clasped by the right hand, while the thumb 95 of the left hand is free to be brought to bear upon the catch.

It is my intention to provide one holder for each storage-receptacle and to fill each holder with labels having denoted thereon the name xoO or symbol of the article contained within the receptacle to‘ which it is attached. It is obvious that if the printed labels are not already filled out with the subject-matter nec624,701 essary they may be written and placed within the holders at leisure. It will thus be seen that when part of the contents of the storagereceptacle is removed to a smaller one a la5 bel can be readily taken from the holder of said storage bottle or receptacle and placed . upon said smaller one. It will be apparent that by this arrangement a great saving of time and trouble is permitted and the liabil10 ity of placing an incorrect label upon a bottle is reduced to a minimum.

If it is desired, a card-holder, as shown at G in Fig. 1, may be formed on or secured to the outer face of the holder in any suitable 15 manner. This may be used to receive a slip or card having the name or symbol of the contents of the receptacle to which the holder is attached denoted thereon. By this arrangement any bottle may be used without the ne20 cessity of painting, burning, or pasting this information thereon, the set together making a neat and attractive appearance. This arrangement will be especially useful in connection with bottles which have not been pre25 viously prepared with a particular name or symbol and permits the use of the bottle at different times for different articles without necessitating the mutilation or covering of the original characters thereon, as is gener30 ally done with the bottles now in use.

In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of myinvention; but Ido not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without 35 departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.

As shown in the drawings, I preferably 4° slope the bottom of the holder upward and forward, so as to hold the labels, which are of equal length, one slightly above the other and to permit the forward one to be readily withdrawn when it is so desired. I also prefer 45 to paste or otherwise attach to the outer face of the cover a slip having denoted thereon the cost, selling-price, or other desired informa tion concerning the contents of the receptacle to which it is attached.
