GLOVE-CASE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 615,790, dated December 13, 1898.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Sanford Bodwell, of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new 5 and useful Improvement in Glove-Cases; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

io This invention has reference to a case in which gloves, neckties, and other articles of wearing-apparel may be held in the folded condition and protected against disarrangement and injury.

Gloves, neckties, dress-suits, and other wearing - apparel when placed in the usual trunks, cases, or drawers require to be folded neatly and kept in the folded position until they are required for use to preserve them so 20 as to present a smooth and tidy appearance when they are worn.

The object of this invention is to provide a simple case, proportioned to the average size of the articles to be packed therein, in which 25 the articles will be held in their folded condition until they are required for use or exhibition.

The invention consists in the peculiar and novel construction of two or more covers of 30 suitable dimensions provided with bands or straps extending across the inner surfaces of the covers and secured to the adjacent cover, whereby an article placed on the straps or bands of one cover will be by the folding of 35 one cover over the article on the adjacent' cover and the turning of the cover transferred under the bands or straps of the turned cover and held in the folded condition, as will be more fully set forth hereinafter.

Figure 1 is an edge view of a case consisting of four covers in the folded condition. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the inside of the fourcover case, showing the bands or straps for securing the articles. Fig. 3 is an end view 45 of the same on a somewhat enlarged scale.

Fig. 4 is an end view of a two-cover case made after my invention. Figs. 5 to 16 are diagrams illustrating the method of filling the several sections of, a four-cover case with the de50 sired articles, and for the purpose of illustra tion the case is shown in these figures as adapted to hold and protect folded gloves. Figs. 5 to 7, inclusive, illustrate the manner of filling compartment No. 1, in which the glove is placed on top of the bands on com- 55 partment No. 2, as is shown in Fig. 5. The cover or compartment No. 1 is now folded over the glove on compartment No. 2, placing the band of No. 1 over the glove by turning the compartment No. 1 over onto compart- 60 ment No. 3. The bands of No. 2 fastened to No. 1 at one end lift the glove from No. 2 and secure the same on compartment No. 1, as is shown in Fig. 6, and on opening the case the glove is retained by the bands on No. 1, as is 65 shown in Fig. 7. Figs. 8, 9, and 10 illustrate the filling of compartment No. 2 by placing the glove on No. 1 and transferring the same to No. 2. Figs. 11, 12, and 13 illustrate the filling of compartment No. 3 by placing a 70 ' glove on No. 3, folding No. 4 over No. 3 and then over No. 2, and reversing No. 4 to open the case. Figs. 14,15, and 16 illustrate the filling of compartment No. 4 by folding No.

over No. 3 and over No. 2 and then revers- 75 ing the folding of No. 4 to open the case, as shown in Fig. 16.

In the four-section case (shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3) the ends b' of the bands or straps b b, extending across the section or compartment No. 1, are secured to the outer edge of the section, while the ends b² of the bands or 95 straps b b are secured to the adjacent section. The bands or straps c c extend across the compartments 2 and 4 and have the ends c' secured to the outer edge of section 4 and the . ends c² to the adjacent section or compart- 100

615,790 ment farther from the opposite ends of the compartments or sections than the bands or straps b b.

In the two-section case (shown in Fig. 4) 5 the bands or straps b b are secured at the end b' to the outer edge of the section or compartment a, extend across the inner face of the same section or compartment, and are secured at the end b² to the adjacent edge of the other io compartment, while the ends c' are secured to the outer edge of the section or compartment a, extend across the inner face of the same, and have the ends c² secured to the adjacent compartment. As there are two sets of bands 15 or straps b and c, the two sections or compartments are hinged together by means of the same.

If an article is placed on section 2 on top of the bands c c and section 1 is folded over the 20 article, then the bands c c are below and the bands b b are above the article. Now if the edge of section 1, adjacent to section 2, is raised and section 1 is turned over to the right the bands c c will be lifted off from the face 25 of section 2, raise the article, and draw it from under the bands b b, the ends of which are secured to the edge of section 2 and cannot be raised, thereby securing the article to the inner face of section 1 by the bands c c. 30 On turning section 1 back so as to lie face to face on section 2 the article will be between the inner face of section 1 and the bands c c and b b, and on turning section 1 to the origi nal or open position the bands b b will extend over the article and securely hold the same in 35 place.

When the case is folded together, the articles contained in it are firmly held in their folded condition. The case may be packed into a trunk, a drawer, or secured by straps. 40 It may be roughly handled and moved in traveling without injury to its contents. When opened, all the contents are in sight. Any one or all the articles may be inspected or removed, thereby making it very desirable for 45 packing and protecting goods on sale which have to be exposed to inspection.
