IMPROVEMENT IN BOOTS AND SHOES.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known -that I, Rudolph Vollschwitz, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Lacing for Shoes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, enabling those skilled in the art to fully understand and use the' same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which—

Figure 1 represents a side elevation of this invention.

Figure 2 is a transverse section of the same.

Figure 3 is a detached elevation of the flexible wedge which-forms the principal feature of the same.

Similar letters of reference in the several figures indicate like parts.

This invention consists, in the arrangement of a flexible wedge, ip combination with a series of loops placed in a zigzag position and attached alternately to the opposite edges of the opening or slit in the shoe, in such a manner that by drawing said flexible wedge through the zigzags loops, the slit in the shoe is closed, and by withdrawing the wedge the slit is permitted to open, and the operation of lacing and unlacing a shoe can be performed with little trouble and in a very short time.

A represents the slit in the side or front of a shoe or gaiter-boot. The opposite edges of this slit are provided with loops,, a, which are placed in a zigzag position, as clearly shown in fig. 1 of the drawing, and which may either be made of leather or of any other suitable material, and attached to the edges of the slit A in any desirable manner. Into the loops a is fitted a flexible wedge, B, to the upper or thin end of which is attached a piece of tape or lacing, C, by means of which the same can be readily drawn into the loops, said tape or lacing being of such a length that the same, when once passed through the loops, is not liable to get out spontaneously. If the flexible wedge is withdrawn from the loops d, the slit A in the shoe is free to open and the shoe can be readily put on or taken off, and by pulling the wedge up into the loops, the slit A closes gradually and the shoe is fastened. It will be readily understood that the flexible wedge can be made of leather or any other suitable material capable of producing the desired effect, and the zigzag loops a can be made in such a manner that the same williprove to be an ornament for the shoes to which the same are applied.
