BICYCLE-SUPPORT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 614,432, dated November 22,1898.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Dow B. Austin, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of 5 Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bicycle-Supports; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to io which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in bicycle-supports; and its object is to provide the same with certain new and useful features hereinafter more fully described, and partic15 ularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which—

Like letters refer to like parts in all of the figures.

The device is constructed principally of sheet metal, preferably of galvanized iron. The end sills A A are folded longitudinally at right angles and present sides oppositely inclined at about forty-five degrees. The edges 30 are folded inward and engage the downwardly-turned edges of the base-strips J, thus forming substantially triangular structures. The middle sill A' is formed with similar oppositely-inclined sides and folded edges, and is 35 also provided with a central, longitudinal, and rectangular channel K of suitable width to receive the posts 0, which posts are also made of sheet metal and folded twice at right angles, forming channel-bars. These posts are 40 secured at their lower ends to the vertical walls of the channel K in any suitable manner and arranged in parallel pairs and at a suitable distance apart to receive locks D, the respective ends of which locks engage the 45 channels of the said bars and are secured in the same in any suitable manner. These respective pairs of posts are placed at such a distance apart that a bicycle-wheel will pass between the same and provided with opposite openings 0 for the passage of the bolt D' of the lock, and the locks D are provided with bolts D' of sufficient length to pass across this space and through the said wheel, thus securing it in place. Below said locks said posts are provided with smaller channel-bars O', se- 55 cured within the larger bars, leaving a narrow groove between them, within which may be inserted panels or cards I, on which may be printed any suitable advertising or other matter. To permit insertion of these cards and 60 to drain off water, the channel K is provided with slots L opposite the lower ends of the grooves described and extending across the space between the parts C' O'. The bars C' 0' also engage the locks D and support the same 65 in place and further serve to strengthen the parts 0 C. The upper ends of the posts C are engaged with a cap formed of sheet metal, having a central longitudinal rectangular channel opening downward and laterally-ex- 70 tended sides E', having folded edges. The upper ends of the posts are also secured to the vertical sides of the channel E in any suitable manner.

B are tie-bars connecting the ends of the 75 sills AAA' and secured thereto, and F are diagonal brace-bars extending from the ends of the outer sills to the end posts C to support the same. On the outside of the end posts are pockets M, in which are inserted 80 the ends of a suitable rod G,bent twice at right angles and extending above the top of the structure and parallel to the cap E, upon which rod may be detachably supported any sign or advertising-card H. The oppositely- 85 inclined sides of the sills form suitable inclined faces to engage the rim of a bicyclewheel as well as a suitable watershed.

The features described whereby my bicycle-support is adapted to serve as a display- 90 stand for cards and signs are reserved as subjact-matter for another application to be filed in the division having “advertising,” according to requirement of the office.

The details of construction in the lock 95 whereby the bolt is operated are shown in an application filed January 24,1898, Serial No. 667,677, in locks and latches.
