TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be· it known that I, Ashael Todd, Jb., of Pultneyville, in the county of Wayne, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Marking Stamp for Numbering and Lettering Sheep; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to.the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which—

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a letter, with its handle or stem, s, made on my plan.

Figure 2 is a similar view of one of the figures or numerals, made on the same plan.

This invention consists in providing as a new article of manufacture a very simple, cheap, and efficient device for numbering, and for lettering sheep, consisting of cast letters.or numerals of skeleton form, and each having a skeleton or projecting shank to serve as a handle.

To enable others to make and use my invention, I will'describe its construction and operation.

I make the whole alphabet of letters, and the ten Arabic characters or numerals, of any suitable size. They are. each provided with a handle or shank, s, cast upon the back, ^;as shown in the drawings. The paint is mixed to a proper consistency, as ordinarily used for such purposes, and spread upon a smooth board. The operator takes the desired letter or figure by the stem, s, in his fingers, similar to the manner of holding a pen, and after dipping the face upon the paint on the board, places it upon the animal. After removing the stamp, if he finds that the mark is not complete, oris imperfectly made, the inking and stamping with that letter or figure may be repeated, and the manipulator, on account of the skeleton form of the stamp, is able to place it in precisely the same spot any number of times without any danger of causing blots, which is altogether unavoidable, in the use of the wooden or block stamps ordinarily used for such purposes.
