To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, George T. Woodside, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and. State of 5 Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tongues for Shoes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to io which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention has relation to improvements in tongues for lace-shoes for foot-wear; and the object is to provide a tongue of this class that can be padded or stuffed to properly con15 form the shoe to the foot.

To this end the novelty consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the 20 claim.

In the accompanying drawings the same reference characters indicate the same parts of the invention. ,

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my im25 proved shoe-tongue. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same.

represents the usual flexible tongue proper, and 2 represents a backing-piece of _z the same flexible material secured to the 30 tongue proper by two longitudinal rows of side stitching 3 3 and a single row of transverse stitching 4, forming a pocket or envelop between the tongue proper and the backingpiece, with an opening or mouth at the upper 35 θ^η<1.

The tongue flares gradually from its base or lower end to the top and in practice extends from the upper front to the upper edge of the vamp. The lower end of the tongue40 piece 1 projects below the backing-piece 2 and forms an attaching projection l^a.

represents a projecting ear on the backing-piece 2, and 6 represents a flexible flap secured to the upper curved edge of the rear side of the tongue proper, which engages the 45 ear 5 and holds it in place.

represents the flexible or elastic stuffing, with which the pocket may be packed to build up the instep to conform to the standard cut of the shoe. 50

Although I have specifically described the construction and arrangement of my invention, I do not desire to be confined to the same, as such changes and modifications may be made as fall within the scope of my in ven- 55 tion without departing from the spirit thereof.
