Application filed July 8,1897. Serial No. 643,798. (No model.) Patented in Sweden January 15,1895, No. 6,765; in Germany September 20, 1895, No, 92,828; in England November 26,1895, No, 22,599; in France November 27,1895, No, 252,026, and in Denmark November 24,1896, No, 874,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Erik Gustaf Nicolaus • Salenius, a subject of the King of Sweden and Norway, residing in Kraftriket, Albano, 5 in the Kingdom of Sweden, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drums for Centrifugal Machines, (for which patents have been granted in Sweden, No. 6,765, dated January 15,1895; in Denmark, No. 874, dated io November 24, 1896; in Germany, No. 92,828, dated September 20, 1895; in France, No. 252,026, dated November 27,1895, and in Great Britain, No. 22,599, dated November 26,1895,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to drums for the class of centrifugal machines in which the drum must rotate at a high speed, as in centrifugal separators, for example. The strain on these drums is very considerable, and owing 20 to this they have been, up to the present time, made from forged metal (usually steel) either , by stamping and spinning them up from plates or hollowing them out from a solid piece. As the drum-wall must, with this con25 struction, be quite thick' in order to stand the strain the drum is quite heavy.
• The object of my invention is to produce a drum for this purpose which shall be, as compared with those above described, light, 30 strong, and less costly.
In carrying out my invention I construct the body of the drum from rings of metal tubing laid closely together and secured together for strength, and to close the joints 35 by soldering, brazing, or the like. The tubing used may be of any sufficiently ductile metal, as steel or copper, for example.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated two embodiments of my invention.
Figure 1 is a vertical axial section of a drum with two chambers having its side walls formed of rings of continuous spirallylaid tube or pipe supported on a bottom made from a plate of metal, and Fig. 2 is a 45 similar sectional view of a drum having both its bottom and side walls formed of endless rings of tubing. Figs. 3 and 4 show sections of the tubing that may be used.
Referring first to Fig. 1,1 represents a cir cular bottom fixed on a, spindle 2. On this 50 bottom is mounted the drum-wall, formed of rings of spiral tubing 3, the base-ring being secured to the bottom 1 and the closely-laid rings being secured together by solder 4. The drum may have almost any contour de- 55 sired. In Fig. 1 it is formed with upper and lower compartments A and B.
In the construction of Fig. 2, which shows a drum having but one compartment, the bottom 1, which maybe concave or flat, is formed 60 of tubing 3 as well as the side walls, and the tubing is in the form of endless rings laid close together and soldered or brazed together, as explained with reference to Fig. 1.
In the figures the tubing is represented as 65 circular in cross-section, as this is the more common form and it serves my purpose; but the tubing may have other sections, as indicated in Fig. 3, and there may be more than one tier of tubing, as indicated in Fig. 4. 70
A drum constructed in the manner described is relatively very light and strong, and owing to the perfected modes of making such tubing as would be required and the simplicity of the construction the cost of 75 production of the drums is less than by the present known methods.
It will be understood that in my construction the wall of the drum is formed of the rings of tubing, the metal used for securing 80 them together and closing the joints being merely incidental to the construction. I am well aware that it is a common practice to surround a metal vessel with a coil of tubing through which to pass hot or cold liquids for 85 heating or refrigerating purposes, and also that it has been proposed to cast such a coil in the metal forming the Avail of the vessel; but this has no relation to my invention. In my construction no passage for fluid is pro- 9c vided in the tubing. Indeed, the structure may as well be composed of a series of endless rings not connected to form a continuous passage.
