Beit known that I, Louis M. Miller, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Penn5 sylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handles for Cycles, &c., of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this io specification.

The object of this invention is to provide a pneumatic handle of simple and efficient con struction for bicycles and analogous vehicles, whereby the usual jarring action upon the 15 hands of the rider is materially reduced; and to this end the invention, as’generally stated, consists in the provision of a shell or tube of rubber provided on its outer extremity with an air-valve and fitted to the end of the han20 dle-bar, whereby the said shell or tube may be readily inflated, as will hereinafter appear.

A represents my improved hand le, and B a handle-bar to which it is applied. The handle comprises an india-rubber tubular mem30 her which is snugly slipped upon the end of the handle-bar. Within the wall of this member is formed a circular series of longitudinal cells a, the inner ends of which are closed, as at ct', while their outer ends terminate in a 35 common passage a² at the extremity of the handle-bar. The external portion of this cellular member extends outwardly beyond the handle-bar, as at a³, and is equipped with an air-valve of any approved pattern. In the 40 present instance the valve comprises a screwthreaded shell c, provided on its inner end with a flange c', which engages the inner side of an internal flange a⁴in the extension a³ and is securely clamped thereagainst by means of 45 a coacting washer c² and screw-nut c⁸ on the shell. In this shell is fitted the valve c⁴, Avhich normally seals the air-inlet port. Screwed on the outer end of the shell is a cap c^x, on which is formed or secured a hood c⁵, that embraces and incloses the outer end ex- 50 tension of the tubular member and affords a shield therefor.

To inflate the handle, the cap,Avith its hood, is removed and the nipple of an air-pump of usual construction is applied to the valve- 55 shell. Air is forced through the valve into the common passage a², thence to the series of cells, thus inflating the outer portion of the handle and at the same time clamping the inner portion thereof tightly against the cen- 60 trally-disposed handle-bar. This being done the pump is detached from the valve and the cap and hood are reapplied to the handle.

The exterior of the handle is preferably, though not essentially, swelled, and longitu- 65 dinally fluted or corrugated, so as to afford a firm and convenient grasp for the hand.
