To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, John B. Grimmett, a citizen of the United States, residing at Corso, in the. county of Lincoln, State of Missouri, 5 have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Elevators for Harvesting-Machines ; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled ro in the art to which it appertains to.make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in elevators for harvesting-machines.

The object of my. in vention is to adapt the 15 elevator for use in either light or heavy grain.

The invention will first be described in connection with the accompanying drawings and then pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective 2o view, partly in section, of an elevator embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a side view of the same. Fig. 4 is a detail of one of the lugs.

Referring to the drawings, A is the usual elevator-casing, having slots at 1 and 2, as shown.

B is an upper drum-shaft on which is pivotally hung a pair of upper side bars, 3, in 30 which is journaled an idler-drum C, a driving-drum D being fixed on the drum-shaft B between the side bars, as will be fully understood from the drawings.

E is an endless canvas apron constructed as 35 usual and passing around the idler-drum 0 and driving the drum D, being operated by power applied to the drum-shaft B in any suitable manner, as by pulley 4, the end of the drum-shaft being extended beyond the casing 40 A for that purpose.

Each upper side bar, 3, is provided with a lug 5 extending outward through the slots 1 and projecting a short distance beyond the sides of the casing A, these ends being en45 larged and provided with studs 6, which enter and retain in place the lower end of springs 7, held at their, opposite ends by rigid stops 8 fixed to the sides of the casing at the ends of the slots 1.

A similar endless apron, E', is located in the casing A below the upper apron, the construction of the supporting and driving mechanism being the same, but arranged in opposite order—that is to say, the lower idler drum-shaft, B', is in line below the upper drum, D, while 55 the lower idler-drum, O', is directly below the upper drum-shaft, C.

It is apparent that the upper side bars will be held in close contact with the lower side bars except at the time when the grain is pass- 60 ing between the aprons, at which time the side bars will be crowded apart, the free ends of the upper side bars rising, swinging on the drum-shaft, while the free ends of the lowerside bars are forced downward, the springs 7 65 and 7' acting on the lugs 5 and 5'.
