METALLIC BED-FASTENING.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Peter H. Mellon, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have In5 vented a certain new and useful Improvement in Metallic Bed-Fastenings, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of thisspeciio fication.

The object of my invention is to provide a means of securing the side rails of a bed tb the posts thereof which will keep the head and foot pieces rigidly in square with the bed15 bottom. I dispense with the castings commonly used on the ends of the side rails, which are provided with a taper-pin fitting into a taper-slot on castings secured to the posts. I accomplish this object by means of 20 the device shown in the drawings, in which—

Fig. II illustrates in perspective the same as shown in Fig. I, 25 excepting that my right-angle side rail is reversed in order to support bed-slats. is the bed-post. 2 is a casting secured to the said bed-post adapted to support the side and end rails.

is a block, approximately cubical in shape, 35 cast or welded to the part 2.

is the side rail, made of right-angle iron.

is a bolt adapted to pass through a hole in the block 3 and secure the side rail 4 thereto.

and 7 are holes in the side rail 4. When 40 the bolt 5 secures the side rail 4 through the hole 6 the angle of said side rail is as shown in Fig. II, and adapted to support the bed slats or springs. When the bolt 5 secures the said side'rail through the hole 7 it is in the position shown in Fig. I. 45 are the end rails.

is a bed-slat, (shownby broken lines,) and 10 is a thumb-screw which may be used to secure the bolt 5 instead of the ordinary nut.

My device provides a fastening which 50 avoids the accidental breakage so common when the ordinary taper pin and socket are used. It also provides a fastening which permits the reversing of the right-angle side rails of the bed when desired. 55

The part 2 and the cubical piece 3 are preferably cast in one piece. The bolt 5 may also be cast in the piece 3.
