To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Allie R. Welch, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chelsea, in the county of Washtenaw and State of 5 Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curtain-Poles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

ro The invention consists in the peculiar construction of a curtain-pole comprising a split tube, a rod therein, over which one end of the curtain is adapted to be looped, and caps for the ends of the tube.

Theiuvention further consists in the peculiar construction, combination, and arrangement of the various parts, all as more fully hereinafter described.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective so view showing the parts of the curtain-pole detached. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the pole, showing the rod being engaged into the split tube. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section through one end of the pole, show25 ing the parts in position. Fig. 4 is a crosssection thereof; and Fig. 5 is a similar crosssection centrally of the pole, showing the construction of the telescopic pole-sections.

The pole consists of a split tube A, prefer30 ably of sheet metal, and also preferably formed in sections telescopically engaging together. The section B is provided with an inwardly-extending trough-shaped flange C, and the section A is provided with a bead 35 formed by a similar flange D, the bead Il.being of such size as to slide inside the troughshaped flange C, and thus permit of telescoping the sections within each other to adjust the pole to different lengths. These in-turned 40 flanges form rounded edges on the lips of the slot E of the split tube.

F is a rod, preferably of wood, of suitable diameter to fit loosely within the pole, and over which one end of the curtain F' is adapted 45 to be looped. Whenthuslooped, the rod, with the curtain thereon, may be forced through the slot in the bottom of the pole, as shown in Fig. 2. When the rod is inside, the curtain will hang through the slot, as shown in Fig. 4.

G are cup-shaped caps adapted to fit over 50 the ends of the tubes, and they are of such diameter as to require that the tube shall be slightly compressed, so as to bring the loops of the slot together fully or partially before the caps yan be engaged in position. The 55 caps thus serve to hold the edges of the slot upon the curtain and prevent its accidental withdrawal. This is further aided by the fact that any weight or pull upon the curtain will tend to pull the rod F against the edges of the 6 c slot, and thus bind the curtain so that it cannot be withdrawn. The caps may be and preferably are provided with suitable ornamental heads H.

In putting this pole up the rod is cut to the 65 desired length and the tube telescoped to the same length before the curtain is placed upon it. This construction gives me a device which is light, cheap, and simple in construction and use. When it is desired to remove the cur- 70 tain, all that is necessary is to remove the end caps, when the tube will spring open and permit the ready withdrawal of the curtain over the rod,, or the rod may be withdrawn endwise or by opening the slot. 75
