To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Clark C. Hill, of Newport, m the county of Newport and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and Im5 proved Carbon-Holder, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which—
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the upper io and lower carbon holders. Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view of the upper carbon holder. Fig. 3 is a plau view.of the lower carbon holder. Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse section of the upper carbon holder, the section being 15 taken on line 4—4 in Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse section of the lower carbon holder, taken on line 5—5 in Fig. 3.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
The object of my invention is to provide carbon holders -for the upper and lower carbons of electric lamps, which will hold them in the position of use without the necessity of employing screw clamps or adjusting screws.
25, My invention consists in a longitudinallv slitted socket, made of spring material and provided with an encircling spring, the socket being adapted to receive the end of the carbon rod and hold it axially in line with the 30 carbon holding rod, all as will be hereinafter more fully described.
The upper carbon holder A, consists of a cylindrical socket of spring metal, bored out at the upper end and screw-threaded to re35 ceive the carbon holding rod of the lamp. The walls of the socket are thickened at its lower extremity, and grooved circumferentially to receive the circular spring a. The mouth of the socket is flared to facilitate the entrance of the carbon rod B, and in the socket 40 are formed longitudinal slits &, which render the sides elastic, so as to allow the socket to adapt itself to carbon rods of slightly different diameter.
The lower carbon holder A' is like the up- 45 per carbon holder, with the exception of the screw threaded portion c, by means of which the holder is attached to the lower part of the lamp. The said screw threaded portion is of sufficient internal diameter to screw on the 50 boss formed on the lower part of the lamp frame. The lower holder is provided with the circular spring a, and is slotted as in the other case.
It is obvious that any desired number of 55 slots may be formed in the holders, and that the sections of the socket formed by slotting, may be made to clamp the carbons sufficiently for practical purposes without employing the circular spring a, but I prefer the construe- 60 tion herein shown and described.
