WOVEN-WIRE MATTRESS.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Alonzo Bell, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city and county of Philadelphia and State of 5 Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Woven-Wire Mattresses, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in io woven wire mattresses and the object of my invention is to furnish a device by means of which the woven wire surface of a mattress may be prevented from sagging down after it has been for some time in use.

Woven wire mattresses, as ordinarily constructed, consist of a top made of a sheet of woven wire, the edges of which are surrounded and attached to a metal frame, usually a stout piece of iron or steel wire, and a bottom 2o of wooden or metallic slats to which are attached the lower ends of helical springs; the upper ends of which are incorporated with or bear against the sheet of woven wire. Sometimes the bottom, instead of being formed of 25 slats, is made of woven wire and is similar to the top; in this case the springs bear against both the bottom and top sheets of wire.. All mattresses of this kind, after having been in use a short time, become sagged down in the 30 middle which impairs both their looks and usefulness. My device for preventing this sagging of the mattress consists of a' steel spring or springs, the lower end or ends of which are secured to the lower part or bottom 35 of the mattress, and the upper end or bight of which bears against a strip of metal, the ends of which are secured to the frame of the woven wire and which passes across the mattress from one side to the other beneath the 40 surface of the woven wire.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views:—Figure 1, is a 45 plan of part of a woven wire mattress furnished with my improvement; Fig. 2, a sectional view on line 1—2—Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a plan of spring, Fig. 2; Figs. 4 and 5, sectional views on line 1—2—Fig. 1, showing modifications of 50 my invention, the helical springs being omitted and Fig. 6, a sectional view of a mattress, both the top and bottom of which are composed of woven wire, the helical springs being omitted.

The spring G. may have any convenient or suitable form. In Fig. 1 it is circular or elliptic in shape; its ends are furnished with 65 slots a, as shown in Fig. 3, and these ends are secured by bolts or rivets to the bottom C. The central part of the spring is secured by rivets, or otherwise, to the strip F. The slots a allow the spring G. to be expanded 70 when the weight of the body is upon the mattress.

In Fig. 4, the spring G.has one end secured to the bottom C. and the other to the strip F. In Fig. 5 the spring has a Z. shape. 75

In Fig. 6 a Z shaped spring is shown applied to a mattress, both the top and bottom of which consist of woven wire.

The springs G. act to keep the strips F. horizontal and these strips, having their ends 80 secured to the frame B. oE the mattress A. always, where there is no weight upon the mattress, keep the Sides of the mattress apart and thus insure its keeping flat.
