MILL FOR GRINDING BARK, CORN, &amp;c.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 484, dated November 25, 1837.

To dll whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, Charles Parker, of Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented an Improved Mill for Grinding Various Articles, such as Bark, Corn, Drugs, Coffee, Spices, &amp;c., and that the following is a full and exact description thereof.

My mill is to be made of such size as shall best adapt it to the purpose to which it is to be applied, as the principle of construction will admit of its employment for such as are large, and also for those which are small.

The accompanying drawing represents the mill in a vertical section through its center.

A, is the hopper for containing the material to be ground; B, the exterior conical shell of cast iron; and C, a conical nut adapted thereto.

D, is a crossbar which sustains the joints, or lower bearings of the nut, and which may be raised or lowered by means of the thumb screws. The lower edge of the nut is so formed as to constitute a bevel or crown wheel, as shown by the cogs or teeth E, E; and into this wheel the ’pinion F, gears, and the nut is consequently made to revolve when the shaft G, is turned by the 30 handle H, or by any adequate power applied to it. For most purposes the distance to which the nut will require to be raised or lowered will not be such as to interfere with the gearing of the wheel and pinion, 35 and when it is requisite that this range should be greater, the shaft G, is to run in bearings which may also be raised or lowered. The lower part of the machine may consist of any open frame, an inclosed box, 40 or a drawer, depending upon the purpose for which the mill is to be used.
