To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Ernest Auguste Peacock, gentleman, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Grosvenor Rouse, 5 Thornton Heath, London, in the county of Surrey, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stirrups for Riding Purposes, of which the following is a specification.

io This invention relates to improvements in stirrups, the object being to provide for the disengagement of the rider’s foot in case of the latter being thrown.

Figure 1 is an elevation of the complete 15 stirrup with the releasing-band in position, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same with the band disengaged.

a is the tread or sole of the stirrup, which may be of any of the usual patterns with the 20 addition of a stud or button b at one end.

One side of the arch c is dispensed with, thus leaving a free end, which also terminates in a stud or button b', the side of the stirrup-iron thus left open being inclosed by a stout band of india-rubber d. The stirrup-leather passes, 25 as usual, through the eye e, and the absence of one of the sides of the arch c does not in any way affect the balance of the stirrup, while the india-rubber band d affords the rider a complete control over the stirrup in mounting 30 and riding under ordinary circumstances.

Should an accident happen in which the rider is unable to free his foot from the stirrup, the band d will be disengaged from one of the studs b or b' and the foot will be in- 35 stantly released.
