To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Charles W. Unger, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and 5 Territory of Utah, have invented certain Improvements in Gun-Rests, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in that class of devices commonly known as io “gun-rests,” which are used by sportsmen and others for supporting the arm while carrying the gun, or as a rest for the barrel of the piece itself while being carried; and the object of my invention is to provide a device of this 15 general character which shall be readily adjustable to persons of different height, as well to persons who carry the gun with the left hand as to those who carry and fire with the right, all as will be fully described hereinafter.

The novel features of my invention will be carefully defined in the claims.

In order that my invention may be the better understood, I have illustrated in the accompanying drawings the form of rest in which 25 I prefer to embody my improvements.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view of the rest adjusted for use by those persons who bear the arm with the left hand. Fig. 2 is a face view of the flat base-piece of the rest·, the 30 rest proper, which is in the form of a triangular bracket, being removed; and Fig. 3 is an edge view of the same. Fig. 4 is a side view of the rest proper detached and partly in section. Fig. 5 is a view on a small scale, show35 ing the manner of applying the rest to the person.

In the drawings, A represents the base-piece of the device, which is provided with straps a a, which pass over the shoulder and under 40 the arm of the wearer and are provided with a buckle for adjusting the rest to the proper point.

B is a sheet-metal plate, (shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2,) which forms the foundation 45 of the base-piece, being covered with leather, canvas, or other covering material, which plate is provided with eyesb b, stamped up from or cast integrally therewith, said eyes projecting up from the base-piece through the covering 50 thereof, as seen in Fig. 3.

is the rest proper, which, as before stated, is of a general triangular shape and is provided on its inner face, where it adjoins the base-piece A, with two recesses c c, which take over the eyes or lugs b b when the rest proper 55 B is applied to the base-piece A in assembling the parts.

c' o' are screws, which are screwed up and down from the bottom and top of the rest C and pass through the eyes b b, holding the 60 parts securely together after the manner of a hinge, as will be readily understood. Thus it will be seen that the rest C is held securely to the base-piece A, while capable of being swung back and forth, after the manner of a 65 hinge, in order to suit either right or left handed persons, and in order to hold the rest firmly in either of its two positions I provide the following locking device, which I will now· describe. 70

Set in the body of the rest proper C, which body may be of either wood or metal, as preferred, is a slender steel bolt or plunger D, backed by a spiral spring d. This plunger is provided with a thumb-piece or handle d', 75 which projects through an open slot in the side of the rest C, whereby the plunger may be drawn in, compressing the spring behind it, and when released will be forced out to the position seen in Fig. 4 of the drawings. 80

The leather or other covering of the metal plate B is cut away at B^x, leaving said plate exposed, and at this point are formed two recesses or bolt-sockets &^x side bj⁷ side, which when the rest C is in position lie in the same 85 horizontal plane with the plunger D and are adapted to receive same. These sockets b^xare cut at an angle of about thirty degrees from the plane of the plunger D when the rest is set at right angles to the base-piece A and 90 are aligned with said plunger, whereby as the rest is swung around from its central position either to the right or left said plunger will be forced into one or the other of said sockets, holding the rest firmly in position in either 95 case, as will be readily understood.

The surface C^x of the rest C, on which the barrel of the gun rests, will be, by preference, padded in some suitable manner, whereby the wear of the covering of said rest at this point 100 will be prevented to some extent. I may say here that the several parts of the rest are en

475,640 tirely coveted, by preference, except at the points above referred to as being exposed, though of course this covering is not in any way essential to my invention.

The manner of applying the rest to the person of the wearer will be seen by inspection of Fig. G and will need no further explanation. The rest may be applied either to the person or apparel in any convenient manner.
