To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Reuben D. Wirt, of Independence, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented a new and 5 useful Improvement in Hose-Reels, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention is designed as an improvement upon the hand hose-reel for which Letto ters Patent No. 360,909 were granted to me July 19, 1887, and in which a foot-rest and a handle made of gas-pipe and united by elbowcouplings to give lightness and strength were used; but this my improvement has for its 15 object the production of a cheaper hose-reel provided with running wheels or rollers which are independent of the reel proper and in which an ordinary cross-arm reel is or may be used; and the invention consists in a novel 20 construction and combination of parts, substantially as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanyingdrawings, forming a part of this specification, 25 in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.

Figure 1 represents a view in perspective of a hand hose-reel embodying my invention; and Fig. 2 is a side view in part, upon a larger 30 scale, of the handle with its attached footrest, carrying-wheel, and a brace uniting said handle and rest.

A indicates the double-sided bent handle of the reel, which may either be rounded or 35 straight at its top and -which serves to carry the reel proper B in between its two sides. This handle, which is formed of gas or other like pipe,is united at its lower end by elbowcouplings b with the foot-rest C, also made of 40 like piping. Said handle A and foot-rest C are strengthened on opposite sides of the structure by angular braces D D, formed of rods which are first bent, as shown by dotted lines in Fig.' 2, and then their opposite ends 45 fitted to enter holes drilled through the inner or adjacent shell portions of the handle and of the rest, after which said braces are straightened to give them their proper position and shape and their ends, by construct5 0 ing the braces of-suitable length, made to bear against the inside of the outer shell portion of the handle and rest. This avoids all riveting or otherwise equivalently securing the braces D D to their places.

Wheels or rollers E E, carried by an axle c, 55 are provided on opposite sides of the device at the junction of the handle with the footrest to facilitate the running or moving of the whole device from place to place.

The reel properB is or may bean ordinary 60 cross-arm one,-fitted to turn upon an axle cl between the side pieces of the handle A. This axle is attached to the handle by boring through the inside shell portion of the two sides of the handle and springing said sides 65 apart to receive the ends of the axle cl, and which should be done before the wheels E E and their axle c are attached, and these when attached will hold the whole securely in position. This makes a very light, strong, and 70 durable reel-frame, with facility for detaching the reel, and that can be knocked down and packed very compactly for shipment.

The reel B has its opposite end cross-arms e e united, as usual, by bars f, on and from 75 which the hose is reeled and unreeled. Fastened to one of these cross-arms e by rivets, bolts, or clinch-nails is a double cleat G, which is made of a piece of flat bar-iron, suitably bent. This cleat is so bent and arranged as 80 to form , an inner arm 7i, between which and the adjacent bar/of the reel the one or inner end of the hose carried by the reel is secured, and said cleat is further formed with a lip or arm i to hold, between it and the cross-arm 85 the cleat is attached to, the other or outer end of the hose when moving the whole reel about or when the hose is not in use.
