To cell whom it may concern:

. Be it known that I, M. Joseph Keane, residing^- at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have in5 vented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Taps; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this io specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in , bottle-taps, the object being to provide an article which shall be simple and durable in construction and easy and efficient in opera15 tion.

- With these ends in view my invention consists in a point having an offsetting-shoulder and located in th e lower end of the inner tube of a bottle-tap, and forming the lower bear20 ingforthe outer tube of the tap; in means for preventing the outer tube of such a tap from turning in the cork and for closing the fissure made in the cork by the said means for preventing the outer tube from turning, 25 and in certain other details of construction, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in central longitudinal section of one 30 form which a bottle-tap embodying my invention may assume. Fig. 2 is a detached broken view showing the lower end of the tap in elevation with the induction-ports separated. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing them 35 in alignment. Fig. 4 is a detached broken sectional view shoxving the lower end of the inner tube and the point. Fig. 5 is a detached viexx^r in elevation of the point, and Fig. G is a broken view in elex'ation shoxving the arrange40 ment for limiting the relative rotation of the tubes.

As'herein shown, a metal point, A, having a shank, B, and a shoulder, C, is brazed or otherwise secured in the lower end of the in45 ner tube, D, its shoulder offsetting beyond the same. The said tube is provided near its lower end with an elongated induction-port, E, and at its upper end with a shoulder, F, hax’ing a stop, G, for engagement by the cor50 responding stop, H, of an outer tube, I, xvhich is interposed between the said shoulders of the inner t ube and point, provided al its upper end with an offsetting pointed fin or retaining-point, J, and at its lower end xvith an induction - port, K, arranged to be aligned 55 xvith the port of the inner tube for drawingfluid through the tap, and to be turned past such port to close the tap and prevent the egress of fluid or the ingress of air through it into the bottle. The upper end of the in- 60 ner tube is provided xvith a faucet, L, having at its lower end a ring or cap, M, having a sharp edge, xvhereby it is adapted to penetrate the cork, and so close the fissure made therein by the fin before referred to. The faucet is 65 provided with a nozzle, N, a longitudinal passage, 0, in line xvith the inner tube, and an ordinary plug, P, intersecting the said passage.

In using my improved tap it is manipulated 70 to set the induction-ports out of alignment, as shown by Fig. 2 of the drawings,so that while it is being forced into and through the cork no particles can enter the ports and clog it, whereby this source of trouble in ordinary 75 taps is avoided. As the tap is pushed home the fin of the outer tube sinks into the cork and prevents the tube from turning therein. .When,now,it is desired to drawoff some fluid from the bottle, the faucet and inner tube are 80 turned together to align the induction-port of such tube with the port of the outer tube, the stops at Hie upper ends of the tubes preventing them from turning too far. This done, the plug is turned and the fluid drawn off, 85 after which th e plug and inner tube are turned back, so that the tap is closed at both ends.
