ASAHEL WHEELER, OF NEWTON, MASSACHUSETTS.

IMPROVED BABY-TENDER.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 39,766, dated September 1, 1863.

To all whom it may concern :

Be it known that I, Asahel Wheeler, of Newton, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Baby-Tenders; and I do hereby declare that the folloving is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures marked thereon.

Figure 1 is a perspective view; Fig. II, a longitudinal section on the line A B; Fig. Ill, a cross-section on the line C D.

The object of this invention is to furnish a support to infants, and prevent the injury to the spine and other parts of tbe body that frequently occurs through inattention of the nurse or by sudden and violent movements of the child. While serving as a support, it also acts as a protection to the dress of the nurse. In fevers and many cases of sickness it is also of advantage in keeping the child cool and isolated from the warmth of the body of the attendant. The frame is made of a network of wire, cane, rattan, or other light and slightly-flexible material, which is woven or formed in the shape shown in Fig. I, the sides and back E FE' being curved, as in Fig. HI, and the lower part rounded and hollowed in the form of a quarter-sphere, as seen at G, Figs. I and 11. The frame (shown in Fig. Hl) is lightly covet ed with wadding or curled hair, and over this there is a water-proof covering of enamel-cloth or india-rubber. Two elastic straps, Η H', are fastened at the edges E E', and pass over the rounded back F. They assume the position shown in. Fig. Ill when extended by the insertion of the arm of the nurse, (represented at I.)

When in use, the part F lies upon the arm or lap. The child is supported by the curved sides E E', and is prevented from slipping downward by the rounded cavity G. A second covering of linen over the water proof cloth may be used when required.
