To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Jesse Bright, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lewisburg, in the county of Greenbrier and State 5 of West Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fences, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in Fences; and it has for its object to provide io a simple, cheap, strong, and durable structure, wherein the points which are liable to be subjected to the greatest strains are suitably strengthened.

The invention consists in a certain novel 15 construction and arrangement of device fully set forth hereinafter in connection with theaccompanying drawings, wherein—

Referring to the drawings, A designates the crossed stakes or posts, which are set in the ground at their lower ends and intersect each other at about half their height, and the said intersection is bound by the tie-wire a, after 25 which the end of the intermediate panel-rail, B, is rested in the upper angle formed by the stakes. The outer crossed stakes, C 0, are now arranged, respectively, parallel with the stakes A A and bearing against opposite 30 sides of the panel-rail B. These outer crossed stakes intersect each other near their upper ends, and the end of the upper or rider rail, I), is tied in the upper angle thus formed by the wire d. The outer crossed stakes cross the 35 inner crossed stakes just above the intermediate rail, B, and the intersections are bound by the tie-wires c c, and the outer and inner crossed stakes are connected near their lower ends by the tie-wires e e, on which are rested the ends of the lower panel-rails, E E. The lower panel rails are parallel and are arranged side by side, and consequently the fence is strengthened at its bottom, this being the part which is subjected to the greatest strain, 45 for the reason that both the small and large stock confined by the fence attack this portion. The panel-rails are not merely connected to the stakes by tie-wires,so that when a weight comes against them the wires bear 50 the entire strain, but the ends of the rails are arranged in the spaces between the adjacent sides of the stakes, so that the strain upon one of the rails is distributed and borne by a number of tie-wires. The stakes intersect at four points, and being tied at all of the said 55 points they are rigidly connected, so that the four stakes act as a single post and mutually support each other. The lower ends of the outer stakes may be arranged in the ground;

but I prefer to simply extend them to the sur- 60 face of the ground, as shown in the drawings.
