Be it known that I, James McQuide, of the village of Lansingburg, county of Rensselaer, and State of New York, have invented a new 5 and useful Improvement in Paint-Brushes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a method of constructing and arranging a brush-handle to receive and retain the bristles producing the ic brush.

My invention has for its object the cheapening of the cost of making and the improvement of the connection between the bristles and the handle end.

My invention consists, as will be more fully detailed hereinafter in connection with its illustration, in the combination, with the end of a brush-handle having the usual cored-out end to receive the bristles, of a swell made ex20 teriorly in the handle where encircling the bristles, said swell part of the handle end having turned on its exterior a series of well-defined encircling ribs adapted to receive and retain within the spaces between the ribs a 25 binding coat of paint or cement thereat.

Accompanying this specification to form a part of it there is a sheet of drawings containing two figures illustrating myinvention, with the same designation of parts by letter30 reference used in both of them.

Of these illustrations, Figure 1 is a perspective of a sash-brush containing my invention, and Fig. 2 is a central and longitudinal • vertical section of that part of the brush35 handle containing my invention.

The several parts of the brush thus illustrated are designated by letter-reference, and the function of the parts is described as follows:

The letter H designates the handle, which is of the usual form, and S a swell formed ex teriorly on that end of the brush whereat the handle is cored out at C to receive the bristles. This swell in the handle tapers in reducing diameter from its center to where it joins the 45 handle proper, and also to the end where the bristles B pass from the core, and upon the outer surface of this swell there are turned thereon the well-defined ribs R. The function of this ribbed swell S, or thickened-up part of 50 the handle at the brush end, is to stiffen the wood thereat, and also to utilize thereat the ribs R, which, when painted or covered with cement of any resinoid kind, serve to securely hold the bristles in position and keep the wood. 55 in place. Each of the spaces a between the ribs, on receiving a coat of paint or cement flowed therein, forms a binding-ring upon the wood thereat, which serves to keep it in place where encircling the bristles, as indicated at 00 P, and prevents the wood from splitting. By thus using a series of rings so painted, the brush is made lighter and more easy to handle.
