To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, William Boyd Rodman, of Norfolk, in the county of Norfolk and State of Virginia, have invented a new and Im5 proved Faucet, of which the follo wing is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvement in faucets, and has for its object to provide a faucet particularly adapted for use with station10 ary basins, whereby hot and cold water, either or both, may be made to flow- from one spout and be controlled by one handle; also, w’herein the flow may be increased or diminished or any proportion of hot or cold water be obtai ned. 15 The invention consists in the construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying 20 drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a partial vertical and longitudinal section of the faucet. Fig. 2 is a section 25 taken on the line x x of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a . transverse section online?/?/of the same figure.
Fig. 4 is a front elevation, partially broken away, of a modified form of faucet; and Fig. 5 is a central longitudinal section on liue z z of 30 Fig. 4.
In carrying out the invention a horizontal cylinder, A, is provided, having in the upper side two apertures, a and a', surrounded by pipes B B'. The one pipe B is connected 35 with the hot-water supply and the pipe B' with the cold-water supply, or vice versa. In the lower portion of the cylinder, aligning the space intervening the hot and cold water inlets, a third aperture, 0, is produced, sur40 rounded by the delivery-pipe O'. Within the cylinder a plunger, D, is adapted to reciprocate and also rotate, the said cylinder being manipulated by an attached rod, d, projecting through one end of the cylinder, provided with 45 a handle or hand-wheel, d'. Diametrically in the plunger and about centrally the same an elongated aperture, d2, is produced, of greater length at one si de than at the other, produced by the end walls of said aperture being made 50 tapering. The greater length of the aperture d2 is about equal to the distance intervening the center of the inlet-apertures, as shown in Fig. 1. The end of the plunger to which the handle is attached is provided with a peripheral segmental recess, e, adapted to receive a 55 pin, <?', projecting from the inner side of the cylinder, as illustrated iu Fig. 3, the purpose of which is to limit the rotary motion of said plunger.
In operation the short side of the aperture 60 d2 is made to register with the outlet C. If it is desired to draw hot water in accordance with the arrangement shown, the plunger is pushed back until the aperture d2 registers fully with the inlet», which closes the inlet»', 65 and if cold water is required alone, the plunger is drawn outward or toward the operator, which brings the inlet a! and aperture d2 iu register, closing the inlet a. When itis desired to draw hot and cold water together, the plunger is 70 pushed in until the aperture d2 partially registers with each inlet, and to regulate the amount of water, in any event, the plunger is turned either to the right or left, according to the position of the faucet. When the pin e' 75 strikes one wall of the recess e, the water will flow uninterruptedly, and when the opposite wall is engaged the inlet and outlets are both closed.
In Fig. 4 the faucet is represented as having 8c an inner cylinder, A', the outer casing, A, being provided with the hot and cold water inlets and pipes a a' and B B', as in Fig. 1. The outlet-pipe and outlet are, however, in alignment with the inlet a. The inner cylinder is 85 provided with two inlet-apertures, / and /', adapted to respectively register with the inlets a and a', or register partially with both, as in Fig. 1, and the inner cylinder is further provided with an elongated outlet-aperture, F, 90 upon the oppositeside, adapted to register with theoutletc. To reciprocate and revolvefheinner cylinder, a sleeve, M, is held to revolve within a jacket, M', secured upon the outer cylinder, about centrally the same, which j acket 95 is provided upon one side with a rectangular recess, m, and that portion of the sleeve M exposed by said recess is provided with a transverse slot, n, in which a pin, N, attached to the inner cylinder and projecting outward, is 100 adapted to slide, as shown in Fig. 4.
The operation is substantially the same as ο 375,508 in the faucet illustrated in Fig. 1, the only dif- | fererice being that the manipulation is from the side.
