ELECTROMECHANICAL REEL ASSEMBLY ATTACHMENT FOR A TAPE DECK
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The object of this invention is to provide an adequate braking and control system to control the movement of reels in a tape deck assembly.
Another object of this invention is to provide sufficient braking on the reels so as to prevent the tapes from becoming broken during the rewinding operation at high speed.
Still another object of this invention is to provide a system of braking which will operate equally well on either of two reels in a tape deck assembly depending on the direction of travel of the tape itself.
Another object of this invention is to make provision for instant stopping should a loss of power occur.
These and other objects of this invention are achieved by employing transistorized circuits in combination with electromechanical devices to perform the functions of this invention.
For a complete understanding of the nature and objects of this invention, reference should be made to the detailed description in connection with the schematic drawing and the other drawing portraying this invention.
FIG. 1 illustrates a view of the braking and control system in the tape deck assembly looking upwardly from the bottom of the assembly.
FIG. 2 illustrates the physical layout of the relay control for the electromechanical reel assembly.
FIG. 3 illustrates a schematic circuit diagram showing the arrangement of components required for the electrical operation of the electromechanical reel assembly.

Shafts 13 and 13' extending from the forward and the reverse torque motors shown as dotted lines 12 and 12' through the bottom surface deck 24 of the braking and control device, the shaft being positioned to contact the capstan idlers 15 and 15' on control arms 2 and 2'.
FIG. 2 portrays the physical layout of the relay control assembly 22 which controls the operation of the electromechanical tape deck reel assembly device. The relay control assembly comprises relays 16, 17, 18, 21, condenser 19, transformer 20, and plug 23. The balance of the relay control assembly is explained by a schematic diagram appearing in FIG. 3.
FIG. 3 portrays the circuit diagram for operating the electromechanical tape deck assembly. Power enters the circuit at P-9, passes through relay K-4 to transformer T-l where the power is reduced from 110/115 volts to 24 volts, the power is rectified by a full-wave rectifier composed of diodes DI, 2, 3 and 4, resistor R-l and condenser C-l and light bulb L-4 which indicates the presence of power in the line and acts as a buffer for any current fluctuation. The rectified power than passes through connector P-6 into plug P which is grounded at connector P-8; alternating current is fed into plug P at connectors P-2 and P-7. In operation, plug P is plugged into jack J which is connected to switches S-2, S-3, and S-l through the connectors J-4 and J-5 which are connected in combination to switch S-2, connectors J-3 and J-l being connected to S-3 and S-l respectively. Connectors J-2 and J-7 in jack J are connected into alternating current, connector 6, J is connected to the open side of switch S-3, connector J-8, J is the ground connection.
Reference is made to connector P-1, in plug P. Connector P-1, is connected to coil L-l, diode D-5 and to coil L-2 and diode D-7. Coil L-l and diode D-5 and coil L-2 and diode D-7 being connected in parallel respectively and grounded at G-l. The current is fed from coil L-2 and diode D-7 back to connector P-3, P. Reference is made to connector P-4, plug P, connector P-4, P-1 feeds power to condenser C-2, coil L-3 and diode D-6. Resistor R-2 is connected between connector P-1, P and ground G-2, while connector P-5, plug P is connected to the lead side of coil L-3.
Reference is made to triple-pole double-throw relays K-l, K-2 and double-pole double-throw relay K-3 which have a common connection to the normally closed switch when power is on through relay K-3. Relay K-4 is connected in series across one of the alternating current lead lines. Relay K-4 feeds 110/115 volts alternating current to both triple-pole double-throw relays K-l and K-2 and double-pole doublethrow relay K-3. The other lead wire feeds 110/115 volts alternating current to solenoid Z-1 at one terminal, the other terminal of solenoid Z-l receives its power from relay K-l. Reverse torque motor M-l and forward torque motor M-2 and fast forward drive motor M-3 all receive power into one terminal from lead wire W-l. Power is fed into the other terminal of motor M-l from triple-pole double-throw relay K-2 shown in a normally closed position while power is fed into the other terminal of motor M-2 from triple-pole double-throw relay K-l shown in a normally closed position. Lead wire W-l also feeds power into one terminal of fast forward drive motor M-3 and one terminal of solenoid Z-2. The other terminal of the solenoid Z-2 and the other terminal of the motor M-3 are connected to the normally closed side of triple-pole doublethrow relay K-3. Lead wire W-l also feeds power to one terminal of solenoid Z-3 and rewind drive motor M-4. The other terminal of solenoid Z-3 and motor M-4 are both connected to the normally open side of triple-pole double-throw relay K-l. K-4 is a single-pole single-action relay connected to connector J-2 and connector J-7 in the jack J.
OPERATION
Reference is made solely to FIG. 3 in describing the operation unless otherwise indicated.
The system requires two different types of power to operate (1) 110/115 -volt alternating current to run the motors M-l, 2, 3 and 4 and relay K-4 FIG. 3, and (2) the rectifier supplies 24 -volt direct current to run the controls. The power to the switches S-l 2 and 3 is 24 -volt direct current. J is a jack which is wired to switches S-l, 2 and 3. P is a plug which is inserted into J jack so that the individual numbered connectors in plug P correspond with similar holes in jack J as shown in FIG. 3. This is so that the switch means control on the tape recorder will control the operation of the electromechanical tape deck assembly.
To operate, insert P-9, FIG. 3 into a 110/115 -volt source of alternating current and plug P, FIG. 3 into jack J, FIG. 3. By turning the power on, the contact closes in the single-pole single-throw relay K-4 and admits 110/115 volts power into the system. The 110/115-volt power is fed directly into certain components of the system, which shall be described more fully in the discussion which follows. The 24-volt direct current is developed by passing the 110/115-volt alternating current through transformer T-l to diodes D-l, D-2,3 and 4 into the electronic control system.

Function 1. Place the switch S-l, FIG. 3 in closed position, or “PLAY.” When switch S-l, FIG. 3 is closed, relay K-2 is energized and contacts 7-1, K-2 change to position 7-4, K-2 and 8-2, K-2 changes to position 8-5 K-2. K-2 relay closes permitting 110/115 volts alternating current to pass through contact 4, K-2 to contacts 8-5 K-3, normally closed, then to fast forward drive motor M-3 and solenoid Z-2. Solenoid Z-2 actuates the mechanical mechanism 2, FIG. 1, to engage shaft 13, FIG. 1, with the idler 15, FIG. 1. Power is also applied from contacts 7 and 8, K-2 to contacts 9-3, 8-5, and 7-4, K-l. The power from contact 9, K-2 which passes to contact 9-3, which is normally closed applies power to the forward torque motor shown as M-2. The shaft 13, FIG. 1 extends from motor M-2. Power is supplied from contact 9, K-l to brake solenoid Z-l which is also shown as 5, FIG. 1. The actuation of the brake solenoid Z-l holds both brakes 1 and 1', FIG. 1, away from friction drums 7 and 7', FIG. 1.
The 24-volt direct current through S-l plug P and jack J being connected is applied through connector 1-1 to connector P-1, plug P, to resistor R-2, and condenser C-2, K-3 being in parallel with each other. This causes a delay in the operation of approximately one-half second in energizing K-3 at the end of which time alternating current is applied from contacts 1-3, K-3 to the reverse torque motor M-l. At this interval, contacts 8-5 K-3 change position to 8-6, K-3 due to the action of coil L-3 and the power flowing through contact 5, K-3 is cut off. At this point, the driving power to motor M-3 and the power to solenoid Z-2 is cut off, torque motors M-l and M-2 both continue to run at the normal speed of the motors.
Function 2. Place the switch S-2, to “FAST FORWARD POSITION.” Switch Z-2, is normally in a closed position. Opening the switch S-2, opens the circuit between connectors 4 and 5, and consequently, opens the circuit in K—3 by deenergizing L-3. Contacts 1-3, K-3 open, returning the relay from position 1-3, K-3 to position 1-4, K-3. This removes the power to torque motor M-l. At the same time, positions 8-6 K-3 change to position 8-5, K-3, applying power to the fast forward drive motor M-3 and solenoid Z-2. Solenoid Z-2 causes control arm 2, FIG. 1, to position the capstan idler 15, FIG. 1 in contact with the fast forward friction drum and the capstan shaft 13, FIG. 1. This releases the tension of the tape between the takeup reel and the reel feeding the tape.
Function 3. Place the mechanical switch to the “STOP” position. S-l is now open, power is discontinued to relay K-2, coil L-l is deenergized, contacts 7-4, K-2 return to position 7-1, K-2 contacts in position 8-5, K-2 return to position 8-2, K-2, contacts in position 9-6, K-2 return to position 9-3, K-l Brake solenoid Z-l is deenergized and power to the forward torque motor M-2 is discontinued. The brake springs which are attached individually to each of the brake arm members 1 and 1', FIG. 1 when the solenoid Z-l is deenergized cause the brakes to engage with friction drums 11 and 11' which in turn will bring the friction drums 11 and 11 ’ to a stop.
The system also provides for a safety feature of instant stopping of the movement of the reels should there be a power failure. This is accomplished by release of the brake arms 1 and 1', FIG. 1, to a closed position when the solenoid 5, FIG. 1, is deenergized.
