To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, David Basch, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, 5 haveinvented new and useful Improvements in Ear-Muffs, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to ear covers or muffs; and it consists in the features set forth in the io following specification and claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which—

Figure 1 is a plan view of the device closed. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the device open. Fig. 15 3 is a detail face view of a slide and a loop. Fig. 4 is a detail rear view of a slide and part of a loop. Fig. 5 is a detail view of a hinge connecting two arms. Fig. 6 shows two arms detached from one another. Fig. 7 shows a 2o blank for forming a slide.

A B are arms, which are pivoted or hinged together at C. A stop-hinge is preferable, so that the arms when swung apart in one di25 reetion will be stopped or held in the position ready for use, as indicated in Figs. 2 and 5.

When in position ready for use, the arms A B serve as holders to support the loops D. 30 The loops D are adapted to be provided with pouches, bags, or pieces of fur, cloth or other suitable material to sit over and protect the ears of the wearer.

The loops D can each be readily formed of 35 apiece of wire, the ends of which are joined by hooks or loops E. The loops D are supported on the arms A B by longitudinallyslotted slides F, having their end secured, respectively, to the opposite sides of the loops, 40 and receiving within them the arms of the holder. Suitable hooks or attaching devices, G, hold the loops D to the slides F. The slides F are limited in their movement on the arms A B by stops IT, adapted to engage suit45 able shoulders on the slides. The slides enable the loops D to be placed in various positions on the arms A B, as may be required to suit various persons desiring to wear the muffs. The muffs are thus made adjustable. 50 A convenient form of stop-hinge is shown in the drawings, where the arms A B are pivoted together at G, and one of the arms is provided with a stop, I, limiting the swinging of the arms at the proper moment.

When not in use,the slides F can be moved 55 toward the inner or jointed ends of the arms A B, and the arms A B can be swung so as to lie close together or oneupon the other,whereby the device is brought into compact form, as seen in Fig. 1, and can be readily carried όο in the pocket.

The arms A B, as seen, form a holder or support for the loops D, to hold said loops and any pouches or covers on said loops to the ears of the wearer. The device is made 65 of suitable material—such, for example, as metal. As the loops D are firmly attached to the slides F aud not provided with pivots or hinges, said loops are not likely to become detached or break from the slides. 70

The slides can be covered or wound about with wool, cotton, or other suitable material, to keep off cold or frost. To expose the loops D to view, said loops are not shown in the drawings as being provided with any cover or 75 pouches; but the attachment of pouches or covers to the loops is readily understood.
