To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, Stephen B. Lewis and Franklin F. Lewis, of Portage, in the county of Columbia and State of Wisconsin, 5 have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knit Garments, of w’hich the following is a specification.

This invention relates to knit garments; and it consists in providing the same with a yoke io or shoulder portion knitted integral with or'as a continual ion of but less elastic than the body portion, whether this quality be secured through the use of different material or by varying the stitch.

In the annexed drawings, Figures 1 and 2 are face views of garments embodying the invention; Fig. 3, a plan view of a garment in position on the body.

It is a well-known fact that knit garments— 20 such as shirts, jerseys, guernseys, Cardigan jackets, bicycle-jackets, &c., to each and all of which this invention applies— stretch out of shape about the shoulders and neck, as ordinarily manufactured. To obviate this diffi25 eulty various expedients have been adopted, among others aseparate facing of woven fabric, a binding sewed upon the edge of the knit fabric, or folding the edge under and sewing it to the body. These and other plans are ob30 jectionable, on account of their cost, the unsightly appearance presented, and the thickness produced in the case of a folded edge. All these objections are overcome by this invention, which, as above mentioned, consists 35 in knitting the shoulder portions or yoke less elastic than the body, and sufficiently so to prevent its drawing or being pulled out of shape.

In the drawings, A indicates the body of a garment, which in practice may be a shirt, 40 jersey, guernsey, Cardigan jacket, bicyclejacket, or any similar article, and B.the shoulder portion or yoke thereof.

The body portion A is knitted in a stitch and of a quality of yarn, worsted, or other ma- 45 terial suitable toproducea body of the desired elasticity, in order that the garment may fit closely to the body of the wearer without folds or wrinkles; but the shoulder portion or yoke B is knitted either in a closer stitch, a firmer 50 stitch produced by increase of tension, or in the same or a different stitch, but of different material or quality of material.

It is immaterial in which of the several ways the greater firmness or the decreased elasticity 55 is secured, the invention consisting, broadly, in an article of apparel possessing the peculiarity noted. The inelastic or comparatively inelastic portion may extend from the point where the sleeves join the body to the neck, 0 or may pass more or less around the neck, and may be varied iu width, as desired, or as the particular use for which the garment is intended may demand.
