To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, Charles W. Davis and Henry Rath, Jr., both citizens of the United States, residingputhe city and county 5 of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Roll-Sticks for Carpets, Dry-Goods, &c., which improvement is fully setforthin the following specification and accompanying drawings, in io which—

Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a roll stick or barrel for carpets, dry-goods, &c., embodying our invention, parts being broken away. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of 15 a detached portion. Figs. 3 and 4 represent views-of the inner faces of the heads of the roll stick or barrel.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

Our invention consists of a roll stick or barrel formed of separable parts, which may be readily set up and have carpet, &c., wound thereon, and vdiich may be easily removed therefrom, avoiding creasing or injury to the 2'5 fabric.

Referring to the drawings, A represents slats, of wood or other material, whose ends are fitted into heads B B, and form together a roll stick or barrelon which carpet, dry-goods, 30 &c., may be wound or rolled.

Each head is constructed of cast metal of polygonal form, the sides being plane surfaces and the corners preferably rounded, asshown in the drawings, each of the said heads having 35 an angular opening, G, iuits center for the reception of a winding spindle or shaft, and on its inner face on each side a recess, D, into which the end of a slat is inserted. The recesses D extend at an angle one to the other, 40 and are located near the periphery of the heads, and there is a recess parallel or coincident with each side of the head, so that the heads and slats form together an angular barrel, stick, or roll.

It will be seen that when the parts of the stick or roll are set up, as shown in Fig. 1, the angular spindle or shaft employed for winding or rolling carpet, dry-goods, &c., may be passed through the openings C and within 50 the several slats which constitute the sides of the stick or. roll. The stick or roll is now ro tated by the spindle or shaft, as aforesaid, and the carpet, &c., wound or rolled thereon, both on the heads B and slats A, the periphery of each of the said heads being of sufficient 55 breadth, whereby the carpet or cloth may be rolled on the head as well as on the slats without being liable to be cut or creased, the angular form of the roll stick preventing the material from slipping when first rolled thereon. 60

When the roll of carpet or cloth is formed, the heads may be pulled outwardly, leaving the slats within the roll, the pressure of the carpet, &c., on the barrel forcing the slatsone against the other, preserving the angular form 65 of said barrel, and preventing the roll from unwinding to any material extent at its inner end. When the roll is to be transported or shipped, the ends of the slats maybe covered by labels, &c.; but said slats may be entirely 70 withdrawn, if desired, when the roll is formed.

In some cases we form one or more of the recesses D open to the sides of the heads, as at D', to aid in either the application or removal of the slats. 75

The slats and heads, when separated, may be readily bundled, boxed, &c., and form in a measure g knockdown roll-stick for the purpose intended.

We are aware that it is not ilew to form a 80 collapsible barrel on which cordage may be wound, the same having a spindle portion formed of jointed segments and end disks, within which the cordage is confined; neither is it new to form a collapsible barrel of end 8 = disks slotted radially and having sockets in which slats may be inserted; but in pur construction herein described the end pieces or heads are of such breadth as not only to act as bands for securing the slats in place, but 9c also to permit the carpet or cloth to be rolled thereon without injury to the same.
