ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE

The dual purpose or combination garment shown is an innovation in that it comprises a vest equipped with an attached complemental cummerbund. The vest is tailored for proper wear by restaurant waiters but can be and is likewise custom-made for formal or semi-formal occasions. The cummembund is attractively tailored (gathered and sash-like if desired) and constitutes a companion or complemental part of, spans the lower end portion of the vest and can be, and preferably is, used to fasten the vest with requisite nicety.

This invention relates to garments and apparel and has to do with a vest formal and semi-formal wear, more particularly, to a unique vest and a permanently attached attractively made cummerbund.

Persons conversant with the art to which the invention relates are aware that vests of many and varied styles and types are used, usually by means, for any and all occasions whether formal, semi-formal or for every day informal wear. It is also a matter of common knowledge that cummerbunds, usually for formal and semi-formal wear in conjunction with full-dress suits, tuxedoes and special uniforms are worn for whatever the special occasion or condition calls for. The concept herein disclosed is deemed to be an advance in the art in that it comprises an attractive vest and the combination therewith of an equally attractive and suitable cummerbund. It follows that a general objective of the invention is to provide a feasible, well-tailored dual-purpose garment which lends itself to serve the purposes for which it may be properly advocated and acceptably used.

Briefly, the vest may vary in construction and purpose for which reason it may be provided with straight-edged front panels or sections with or without lapels, may be provided with or without sleeves, with or without pockets, with a full back panel with or without an adjustable belt in the back. The lower front portions are provided at bottom parts thereof with relatively narrow tongue-like extensions which constitute tabs. These tabs overlap and are buttoned or otherwise separably connected together. The cummerbund may be and preferably is one which is characterized by gathered folds or pleats and which is of a proportional width suitable to the vest and of a length which spans or bridges the bottom or lower edge portions of the front panels or the vest to provide the desired wellgroomed appearance.

In carrying out a preferred embodiment of the invention the opposed lengthwise or vertical marginal edges of the front panels of the vest are long, spaced well apart to expose the wearer’s dress shirt and to provide the desired low cut effect. The overlapping tabs can be buttoned or otherwise separably joined. One end portion of the cummerbund is attached and the other end is free and provided with quick separable fastening means.

These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

FIG. 1 is a view in perspective of a combined vest and cummerbund constructed in accordance with the present invention and showing how the component parts are constructed and joined for the desired well-groomed effect ₅ and appearance.

FIG. 2 is an enlarged view taken on the plane of the vertical section line 2—2 of FIG. 1.

FIG. 3 is a view similar to FIG. 1 but at a slightly different angle which shows the button-equipped tab at 10 the bottom of the right vest panel, shows the fasteners at the extreme right and shows the free end portion of the cummerbund bent back to reveal the positioning and holding tab with which it is provided.

FIG. 4 is a rear elevation with a portion broken away 15 to show the combination vest and cummerbund.

The vest is denoted by the numeral 6 and the complemental or companion cummerbund is denoted by the numeral 8.

The vest may be of any suitable material and contoured 20 appearance and made along the lines already described. To simplify the presentation here the vest is set forth as comprising a right front section or panel 10, a left substantially duplicate section or panel 12 a back or back panel 14 with its shoulder portions joined as at 16 to 25 corresponding portions of the panels 10 and 12 and with its edge portions stitched or otherwise joined to complete the vest as denoted generally at 18. Although the panel 12 is shown provided at its bottom with a patch pocket 22 it will be evident that the pocket is an optional feature. 30 The low cut result is attained by providing the inner vertical or lengthwise edges of the panels with substantially straight spaced parallel edges 20. These edges serve to uncover and expose the wearer’s dress shirt or dickey as may sometimes be the case. The lower edge portion 24 is 35 provided with a relatively narrow tongue-like extension 26 which constitutes a first vest positioning-and-retaining tab. This tab may be provided with buttons or other equivalent fasteners 28. It will be understood therefore that the term “fasteners” used is intended to comprehend whatever type ⁴⁰ of fastening means the manufacturer finds to be practical even including, for example, Velcro fasteners.

The corresponding lower edge portion of the front section 12 is provided with a tongue-like integral extension 30 which corresponds to the tongue or extension 26 and con45 stitutes and provides a second tab. This tab is provided with buttonholes 32 which are constructed and arranged to connect with the buttons 28 when the tabs are overlapped in the manner shown in FIGS. 2 and 4. Then, too, the edge portion 34 of the panel 10 is provided, that is ⁵⁰ near the seam 18, with quick separable fasteners. More specifically, the fasteners here comprise eyes 36 which are stitched in place and which in use serve to accommodate properly coordinating hooks 38 on the free connectible end portion of the cummerbund 8.

⁵⁵ With further respect to the cummerbund it comprises an elongated relatively narrow but adequately wide prefabricated band of the general appearance and construction herein shown. The length should be such that one end portion 40 is adjacent the left-hand seam 18 while the ⁶⁰ other end portion terminates adjacent the right-hand seam 18 in the manner shown. The cummerbund may and preferably does conform in purpose and appearance to ruffled and similarly ornate cummerbunds which are currently in use. For purposes of illustration here, the cummerbund ⁶³ is made from a single length of suitable material and is fashioned to include spaced parallel as well as· overlapping gathered folds. These folds are denoted generally at 42 in the drawings. They can be gathered and stitched in ₇θ any practical manner. It will also be noted that the lower edge portion of the aforementioned tab 30 is suitably constructed and stitched as at 44 to the coacting median

3,530,508 lower edge portion of the cummerbund so that the tab 30 is operable in conjunction with the cummerbund. With this construction and arrangement it will be obvious that the buttonholes 32 can be readily attached to the buttons 28 thus overlapping and connecting the two tabs or tongues 26 and 30. With this accomplished all that is necessary then is to attach the hooks 38 to the companion eyes 36 and to thus close the vest and to simultaneously unify and join the cummerbund thereto.

The construction of the component parts is clearly shown in FIGS. 2, 3 and 4 and the manner in which the combination vest and cummerbund is worn is shown in FIG. 1. A more extended description is deemed to be unnecessary.

The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention.
