Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Stirrups,· and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact, description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to improvements in safety-stirrups for riding-saddles; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of devices hereinafter fully explained, and particularly pointed out in the apnended claims.

The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention, in which Figure 1represents a perspective view of my safety-stirrup. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same. Fig. 3 is also a perspective view, and Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view.

Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the stirrup, which consists of two portions, a hinged to one an30 other at their lower end, as shown at b. This st irrup is provided with an upper and lower cross-bar, c d, (lie same being rigidlv secured j to the portion «, while the free ends e e’, of winch engage perforations//'formed in the 35 upper end ofthe portion a', as shown. Upon these bars are sleeves ,&lt;7 g’, the former of which is secured to its bar by a screw, 7/., and the latter is retained in position by a pin, h' on the, lower bar, thus preventing the sleeves 40 from separating from their cross-bars.

B represents a locking lever designed to keep the stirrup in proper position when the rider’s foot is therein, and should he be thrown by the animal this lever comes into play and pei·45 mits the stirrup to open and allow the foot to be readily withdrawn, and it is constructed in the following manner.

.... l, -which engages a notch, m, in the end of the lower cross-bar aforesaid, and when so engaged firmly holds the two halves or portions ot the stirrup to one another; but should an accident occur and the rider le 6c thrown from the back of an animal, his foot would come in contact with the roller on the lower end of pivoted lever, when the latter vould be forced rearwardly and swing on its pivoted ends, at the same time the lockingplate would be withdrawn - from engagement with the notch on the end of the lower crossbar, thus permitting the two halves or portions a a' to separate and release the foot of on the cross-bars serve as shoulders for the latter, and the pin on the lower bar and the screw in the upper keep said sleeves iu place when the stirrup is open. It will thus be seen that with my stirrup the rider cannot gef his foot fast therein, as the pressure on the roller instantly releases the two hinged portions and allows them to
