To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, Bridge Frodsham aiid Morris LEVEiftof the city and State of New ϊ ork, have invented, made, and applied to use a certain new and Improved .Knapsack and Bed Combined; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of otir said invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making’part of this specification, wherein—

Figure 1 is a perspective view of our knapsack-bed as rolled or folded for transportation, r ig. ± represents the same as spread for use as a bed, a portion being in section to show the interior; and Fig. 3 is a cross - section of said bed.

. he.nature of our said invention consists ’ in an india-rubber casing made water-tight ’ and containing a bag of finely-cut cork or ^:other filling and stitched at suitable places, so ; as to fold up readily, and in the said rubber I casing we provide.a pocket to contain articles > of clothing, so that said bed answers' foi.· a ' knapsack and the articles form a pillow.

said pocket c. This pocket c not. only becomes a knapsack, but also answers as a pillow.

It will be evident that our bed and knapsack combined possesses great advantages. There is no possibility of vermin, breeding in the mattress, the rubber casing being air* tight. · The article becomes a life - preserver in crossing rivers, or a large number of them would form a ponton for receiving planks for crossing rivers. Above all other advantages is that of health-to the party using the same, because dampness from the earth, from wet grass, dews, &lt;fcc., is effectually kept from the person, who thereby, being dry, is not liable to rheumatism, lumbago, &amp;e. In cases where used for wounded soldiers, the mattress is not only soft and comfortable, but is hot injured by the soaking up of blood,· as with the common mattresses.

In Fig. 2 we have illustrated the manner in which straps can be applied to our knapsackbed in its folded condition, so as to be carried upon the back.

We are aware that inflated rubber beds and pillows are old, and also that pockets have been applied in mat tresses and knapsacks; but
